Lastly, but certainly not least, it is very inexpensive for an individual or family/group to start, learn, use and sustain a Grow Good Foods Garden (c.) (G.G.F.G.) when using the Texas Raised-Intensive Method.. tm.
What is a Grow Good Foods Garden?(c.)
Basically a Grow Good Foods Gardens (c.) is a raised, trenched bed usually 4 foot wide by 8 foot long. This size is perfect for access to the soil, seeds, plants, fruits, etc. without re-compacting the precious, loosened soil. Rather than building a wider garden, which would lead to re-compaction due to trampling on the soil, a second and third garden (and so on) is built when more gardening is desired. The trench works to collect composted nutrients and water and the sides are heavily mulched to prevent weed growth and conserve water by prohibiting evaporation, The inside of the bed is deweeded, soil loosened and nutrient enriched to a depth of 30 to 42 inches before any seed or plant touches the soil. This garden bed is NEVER to be stepped on again. This effort to not ever compact the soil again is one secret of the success of the Texas Raised-Intensive Methodtm. When the ideal conditions are attained in the soil, a complete eco-system develops which can be used over and over again for future use. When combined with organic composting and heirloom plant varieties, a Grow Good Foods Garden won't require outside fertilizers, (petroleum based or organic) nor will it require constant purchasing of seeds or plants. This makes a Grow Good Foods Garden self-sustaining in many, many ways.

More facts about soil:
When soil is compacted, plants start spreading their roots horizontally because it is easier than trying to go vertically down into near-like concrete conditions. This causes competition among the plants and the nutrients of the soil are absorbed too quickly and are always in need of constant replenishment. The "Row-Planting" method requires re-compaction of the soil to tend to the plants, seedlings and for weeding. This actually allows weeds to thrive as compacted soil is their natural habitat.
When soil is loosened to a depth of at least 24 inches, plant roots can and will easily go down to that level (even further, if allowed). This means stronger, larger plants and fruit yields and also allows CLOSER plantings than "Row-Planting" methods prescribe, as the "Texas Raised-Intensive Method" actually decreases competition among the plants for nutrients
Inside a bed of soil is a breathing microscopic universe of birth, life, and death. When soil is loosened, these worlds are allowed to thrive because they can move around freely, aerate the oxygen and carbon dioxide, and in fact, create a LIVING soil. This LIVING soil is VITAL to healthy crop producing plants. However, when soil is compacted, it is severely limited in being able to breathe and transfer needed gasses. This causes small, sickened plants and yields.
