"THE ELEMENTS OF MAGIC"
EARTH AIR FIRE AND WATER
These are the four creative energies of the universe; an idea that
that was crafted long ago and refined in classical Greece, and is
still accepted today by many Magickal Workers. All four of these
elements are a necessity for human life and work together in harmony
to create and sustain life. They all have both positive and negative
energies and below I have created a list with their associations to
the Magickal World.
THE ELEMENT EARTH:
Mother Earth, her basic nature is fertile, moist, nurturing, and
stabilizing; gravity is a manifestation of her. She is a receptive
type of energy and her associated sense is "touch". Some ritual uses
are for money, prosperity, fertility, stability, and employment.
Drums and all percussion instruments are her associated musical
instruments and her season is "Winter" the time of darkness.
She is connected with the night and direction of the North (the
place of greatest darkness). Astrological signs are: Taurus, Virgo
and Capricorn. The pentacle is the magical tool and some types of
magic related are; Gardening, magnet, image, stone, knot, and binding.
THE ELEMENT AIR:
Invisible and yet quite real, the element air. In a magickal sense it
is the "power of the mind." Its basic nature is flying, moving, and
suspending. A manifestation of air is sound and is a projective type
energy. Hearing and smell are the senses related to air. Ritual uses
are travel, study, freedom, and knowledge. The flute and wind
instruments associate with air. The season of Spring "time of
freshness" and the direction of the East "the place of sunrise"
are directly related to this element. Astrological signs: Gemini,
Libra, and Aquarius. A wand is the magickal tool and types of magic
ruled: divination, visual, and wind magic.
THE ELEMENT FIRE:
The element that must be controlled to be beneficial. It creates and
destroys and can only exist in physical form by consuming something
else. Fire transforms objects into new forms: heat, light, smoke
and ash. The basic nature of fire is purifying, destructive, sexual
cleansing, and energetic. Its manifestation is heat and its energy
type is projective. Its related to the sense of sight. Rituals uses
are protection, sex, energy, courage, and strength. The guitar and
musical instruments associate with this element. The season of Summer
"time of heat" and "the place of heat" the South are directly
related to Fire. Astrological signs for Fire are: Aries, Leo, and
Sagittarius. The magickal tool is the knife and types of magic
ruled are Candle, Storm, and Star Magick.
THE ELEMENT WATER:
An element of cleansing, healing, psychism, and loving. Water's basic
nature is flowing, purifying, healing, soothing, and loving. Water's
energy is receptive. Its ritual uses are: purification, love, peace
marriage, psychic awareness, and dreams. The cymbal and all resonent
instruments associate with this element. Its time is in Autumn "the
time of harvest" and "the place of sunset" the West is its direction.
The Astrological signs are: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Water's tool
is the cup/cauldron and types of magic are: Sea, snow, fog, and
mirror magic.
