Pie sequel beats Blonde ambition

US comedy Legally Blonde, starring Reese Witherspoon, has failed to topple teen comedy American Pie 2 from the top of the UK box office chart. 
The sequel to the 1999 smash hit, starring Jason Biggs and Alyson Hannigan, has continued to perform strongly taking £1.62m in its third weekend. 

Legally Blonde topped the US box office in its opening weekend there, taking $20.4m (£14.5m), but only managed £1.4m here. 


Another new entrant, the Bollywood blockbuster Asoka came in at number nine. 

Shahrukh Khan plays King Asoka in the film which took £235,461 though it was only playing at 76 cinemas. 

The Coen brothers' latest quirky offering The Man Who Wasn't There, a sepia-tinged thriller with Frances McDormand entered the charts at number seven. 

Horror flick 

Box office receipts for its opening weekend totalled £419,679. 

Low-budget horror flick Jeepers Creepers held third place. 

Billed as the scariest movie to come out of America in 10 years it took £1.13m in its second week in the UK charts.

Animated adventure Atlantis: The Lost Empire has remained at number four in the charts with a box office take of £1.1m. 

Voiced by Michael J Fox and James Garner, the Disney cartoon has taken £4.07m since its release. 

America's Sweethearts, with a cast that includes Catherine Zeta Jones and Julia Roberts was at number five in only its second week in the chart. 

It took a disappointing £961,575 at the weekend. 


Musical extravaganza Moulin Rouge has slipped one place to number six. 

Over the three-day weekend period it took £472,809, eight weeks after its release date. 

French feelgood film Amelie is at number eight, having taken £276,343. 

Code-breaking thriller Enigma took £229,858 followed by Cats and Dogs which has leapt back up the charts. 

The film has taken £22.7m in its 13 weeks in the charts. 

Steven Spielberg's epic film about the future AI (Artificial Intelligence) is at number eight, taking £254,570 and British football comedy Mike Bassett: England Manager is at number nine.
