Sharp quits

Sharp to quit Manly at end of season
By Steve Mascord
June 30 2003

Manly coach Peter Sharp is this week expected to follow chairman Paul Vautin in announcing he will not be at the Sea Eagles past this season following a major management shake-up at the weekend.

After a story in Saturday's Herald on a proposal to merge the Manly football club with the leagues club, Vautin stood down - effective at the end of the season - in return for guaranteed funding from the licensed club of $3 million over three years.

Leagues club chairman Ken Arthurson immediately named former Sea Eagles coach Graham Lowe as a contender for the job next season, with Lowe confirming last night he was interested.

A number of sources indicate Sharp told friends on Saturday night he was considering informing the club's players early this week he did not plan to stand for reappointment in 2004. A public announcement would follow.

"Peter has not told me he plans to do that," said chief executive Ian Thomson last night, "but I haven't asked. He would like a decision on next year sooner rather than later, of course.

"A decision on the coaching position will be made at the appropriate time, and that is not right now."

Sharp did not return the Herald's calls last night. His assistant, Des Hasler, and Lowe appear to be the main candidates for his job if he proceeds with plans to stand aside.

"The main issue with me that stopped me coaching in the past has been my health," Lowe said. "And my health is now excellent.

"I've got the energy and enthusiasm to coach again, and I'd look strongly at doing it if the position at Manly became available."

While the ructions at his former club were a concern, Lowe added: "I suppose anyone coming into an organisation in these circumstances has to face a bit of blood on the floor."

The former Warriors co-owner refused to say if he had already held talks with the faction which appears to have now taken a significant interest in the running of the Sea Eagles, saying: "Not really, just . . . I can't really talk about that, mate."

On Channel Nine's The Footy Show yesterday, Vautin said: "There's been a lot of backbiting going on ever since I became chairman last year. The leagues club gives us $800,000, which is terrific, and we're very happy about that but to go on to the future we needed more money.

"And to give us more money, the leagues club wanted to gain more control so someone had to go. Ken Arthurson told me I had to go and eventually I'll stand down as chairman. The reason I am standing down is to ensure the survival of this club."
