  • 'Christy': David Harvey's Father. RAF Sculthorp early 50's ?, Murder of Sgt Martinez from RAF Bentwaters at Gt Yarmouth ?, 4th AAA ?.... Search for 'Christy' / David UPDATE 1/16/00:
The Murder of Airman Milton O. Martinez And The link to my Father:
At about 7:30a.m. on the morning of Sunday 6th September 1953, the body of U.S. Airman Second Class Milton O. Martinez was found by a local milkman on the grass verge adjoining allotments on Freemantle Road. Milton's body was partially clothed in a singlet, tan trousers, black shoes and socks. An enamel hot water jug was found near the body. He had a small amount of cash in his pockets. P.C. 56 Wiseman of the Great Yarmouth Borough Police was first on the scene, his senior officers were informed and the C.I.D. was called. A later post mortem carried out by Dr D. H. Fulton of Home Office Forensic Laboratory at Nottingham gave the cause of death as "asphyxia by strangulation". There were also wounds to the head caused by a "blunt instrument". Another report mentions pieces of enamel found embedded in the skull matched to the jug found nearby. For the Americans this was a Labor Day Weekend. Martinez had processed into RAF Sculthorpe just a week or so before his death. Probably on the day before, ( Saturday 5th ) he set out on a train to come to Great Yarmouth. He had looked around for lodgings in the York Road area and visited a pub in the Howard Street area. He was also thought to have spent some time at a dance at the Britannia Pier. This may well have been his first time off base. Maybe at the same time that Martinez left RAF Sculthorpe for Great Yarmouth, a group of men were leaving RAF Bentwaters headed for Great Yarmouth also. The group made up of airman 2nd class Darvell Fitzhugh who owned the car they were in, Airman 3rd class Ayers, airman 3rd class Paul Stamey and airman 1st class Donald G. Colerick. The car was very distinctive by its age, it was a 1935-1937 (bull nosed ) Morris 10 with a round temperature gauge mounted on the radiator. The car had white stripes on the sides and white painted wire wheels. It is possible that Stamey or Ayers met the group in town rather than travelled with them. The men visited the Queens Hotel in Great Yarmouth. At closing time ( 11:15pm ) the men were seen leaving the Blue House Pub in Howard Street by the then Sergeant Harold New who was on routine patrol with a constable. The police often Patrolled in force, the Howard Street area was rife with drunkenness, brawling and prostitution, and at this time the Scottish fishing fleet was coming in making a volatile mixture. The men seemed orderly to Sergeant New but he noticed the car and one of the men carrying a white enamel hot water jug he assumed was full of beer. At some point after that Colerick drove off in the car leaving the others. Sergeant New was at the Brittania Pier when it closed at 11:45 and did not notice the car or any disturbances. But later, between 2:30am and 3:00am The car was seen on the Marine Parade with Martinez and Colerick in it. This was the last time Martinez was seen alive. Colerick's story is that Martinez had made sexual advances towards him for which he had killed him. Martinez was wearing a red shirt that night and Colerick had tried to clean the blood off the car with it, keeping it with him and finally hiding it in the hollow of a tree near RAF Bentwaters. When Colerick arrived to pick up the group on Sunday morning he told them he had killed a man. The investigation was initially in the hands of Detective Inspector Soards and Detective Constable Tubby. three men were questioned by Great Yarmouth Police. They were James Wellington Grove, Jimmy Alfred Rittenhouse, Frank Samual Slater, all of RAF Sculthorpe. Frank Slater had processed into RAF Sculthorpe with Martinez in during August. Local women known to associate with the Americans were questioned. By the 8th Chief Constable C. Jellif had taken over enquiries. Also on the 8th, thee men were arrested at RAF Sculthorpe, their names were never released. Following a description given to local police about the victim being seen in the car with a person known as Pennsylvania the resident agent at Bentwaters was able to determine that there was such a man at Bentwaters, at the same time, local police determined that a car fitting the description was registered to an airman stationed at Bentwaters. And so, by the 9th the car had been traced to RAF Bentwaters. And the user Donald G. Colerick had been arrested and during interrogation confessed to the murder. Martinez' missing red shirt was found it the hollow of a tree. At this point because of the law under the visiting forces act the investigation was taken over by the Americans, the team headed by Major Brady.
    THE LINK TO MY FATHER
Among the three men questioned at RAF Sculthorpe was, I firmly believe, a man who was known to my mother as Christy. His name sounded to her like Christian Christianson. He is my father. He was questioned largely due to the shirt he was wearing the night of the murder, which matched the one that at that time was missing from the body of Martinez. He was taken for questioning with others from the house of Rose Folkes at 20 Madden Avenue where he was staying. The house at 20 Madden Ave. was just around the corner from where the body was found. My mother was able to account for Christy's whereabouts that night to two British detectives who came to her family home in Church Lane, Gorleston. It is likely but not certain that Christy was Army. My mother referred to him as such and he did not deny it. Despite the enormous amount of help from Ron Burrell who has tracked down some of the men in this story and others who knew them, we have found no trace of Christy or even anyone who knew of him or Roses house for that matter. Of all the men found none have been Army. I think it likely therefore that Christy was Army and so somehow separate from the Air Force groups. Christy was not in the 1953 Sculthorpe Year book which may mean he was not stationed there or was attached to a tenant unit situated off base. In those days Roses house was a popular place for Americans, and, local taxi drivers new it. Yet, thus far, no one we have found can recall it, or the men who stayed there. I have an account from Roses daughter who was very young in those days who says she recalls a Christy. She also recalls him being taken from the house as AWOL. My mother met him at Roses house and knew he would be there if he was in town. So we can place him there for certain. Roses daughter told me of a woman called May Ward who died in the notorious floods of 1953. May had a house in an area of GT. Yarmouth known as Runham, and this, according to Roses daughter was where the Americans stayed prior to her death. Rose then took in the men at Madden Avenue. My mother had not heard of May or that the men stayed anywhere other than Roses. Another piece of rather uncertain information provided by Roses daughter was that the men came from South Dakota or Minnesota. This is more significant than at first it appears as both these areas are full of Christensens and Scandinavians. My mother had a photo of him wearing what she describes as a 'khaki' uniform kneeling in Roses front garden. I have never seen it as it was destroyed in a thoughtless act by my step father. My mother who has always had very poor sight doesn't recall if the uniform did or did not have any badges, which, may have indicated which force he was with she does seem sure that he was of minimal rank however. So far I have found no clues among local women. And what is written here is the sum of my knowledge of my father

  • Trying to locate Arthur McCleary, aka Mac Arthur was stationed at RAF Bentwaters\Woodbridge, USAF, and other bases in Suffolk UK from 1951-53. We believe he could have had something to do with the Military Police or security whilst the bases were being set up. According to his military records, it seems he was stationed in many different bases, for short lengths of time. He changed squadrons, first in the 7527,7506,7519 then 7551. Arthur's last known US address was Lockhart, TX, 1953. We have searched the Internet databases but can not come up with a match for this area. Arthur told people that he came from Rt 1, Rosanky Texas, not far from Lockhart! We had no joy from that area either. We have contacted the local newspaper and they have run a story, with a photo of him, for us, but so far no luck. Arthur was tall and dark, and would have been aged 21 when first stationed here in Suffolk. Arthur also had a passion for motorbikes. Any help in finding Arthur would be gratefully received. E-mail us at: Pat Baker or Donald Wilson. 10/9/99.

My grandmother died in Dec 1944 so my uncle left the baby with her parents, William and Gladys Foster when he returned to the states. Any information on any of this would be so much appreciated. I have not been able to find anything on the plane crash or able to verify any of this information for certain but my uncle included this information in a family tree shortly before he passed away...Kathy Linear

  • Ann Boytim nee Payne Gill nee Compton and Jim Cleverly from Kent, England submitted the following: My wife has recently got interested in the Internet and is trying to trace an old work colleague from the early 1960s from Rushden, Northants called Ann Boytim (nee Payne). She married a US airman named Wayne Boytim around 1963/4 whilst he was serving at the US base in Chelveston, Northants. They later moved to RAF Bentwaters and from there she has lost touch. We believe there was a son born in the mid-60s called Steven/Stephen. We have seen that Ann is listed on 60's Bentwaters site but that is as far as we have been able to trace. There is a Wayne Boytim listed in your White Pages in Tampa, Florida but we believe that is unlikely to be the correct one as we think they may have gone to live in Arizona on returning to the US after his UK service. Any assistance you are able to give us in this search would be most appreciated. 12/2/00

In 1994 I had to go into the Ipswich hospital for back surgery, while there I met and became friendly with an SP dormed on RAF Woodbridge called Walt. I'm Sorry but that's the only name he gave me that I can remember? I recall he had seriously injured his ankle in a fall from his Harley on the back roads between Tunstall and Wanttisden. It would be nice to hear from him again. Maybe he remembers the jokes and laugh's that we had with the staff on our ward. Also the other serviceman who had a bad car smash at Bromswell. Remember the Brut aftershave joke that went slightly wrong? If you are out there get in touch through these pages. I will keep looking in on the missing persons page 2-3 times a month. I will look for Walt to Jerry, OK, and to all those that worked at RAF Bentwaters between 1985-1993, 12/30/00

He was apparently based in World War II near Darlington in County Durham, England and was an airman. He is named on our Dad's birth certificate and is also named on other papers relating to his birth. All we have to go on is his name is Murray E Dugger, he was an American or Canadian airman based near Darlington. Do you know any sites where we may be able to get more information or do you know what the air base may have been called. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
