Seige

Another boring day...

It was a dismal day if ever the young man had seen one, nothing to do for hours on end and he wasn't the type to just sit back and relax while the day sped by. "Curses!" He yelled as he looked up into the branches of a tree, debating whether or not to climb it, purposely fall down, and make everybody in the town rush to help him. "At least then they'd be doing something other than sitting around making lame jokes."

"Oh come on," muttered a new voice and a foot appeared, ready to step on the others head. "It's not that bad in this town and you can always leave you know, you don't even have a home here or nothing so quit your complaining!"

"In exchange for helping me during a time I was in need of assistance the old insane woman told me to stay here for three months and look over the town while she went," he paused, trying to remember her exact words, "over the river and down through the swamp to find a bag of margona seeds."

The foot kicked the others side playfully and the girl to whom the foot belonged sat down next to the young man with his burgundy colored hair. She picked up his long sword and looked at it, tempted to take it out of its sheath. "Why do you walk around with a sword?" She asked, admiring the artwork on it. "You're only, what? Seventeen?"

"Leave it alone," the young man said, closing his eyes. "It's not yours to touch."

The girl set the sword down, her curiosity was amazing, people said it was because she was only six and always wanting to know everything. "Sorry… so is your three months up?"

"Tomorrow is my last day here."

"Aw," the girl pouted, "that's too bad, I don't want you to go." When he did say anything she poked him. "Hey, you still didn't answer my question, why do you have a sword?"

"Because," the other said simply before continuing due to the girl frowning, "I like to know that I can slice the other mans throat before he can slice mine."

"Umm, I don't like the sound of that."

"The world isn't all like this village, in fact, this is one of the most peaceful places I've ever been to."

The girl grinned. "Then why don't you stay? Stay with us Seige! Stay, stay!"

The young man, dubbed 'Seige', shook his head. "I can't, sorry Lilly, but I just can't."

Lilly wrinkled her nose. "Why not?"

"I made a promise to a friend that I must keep," Seige tried to explain, "and that promise doesn't involve me staying in a little village."

"What's the promise?"

"Can't tell you."

"No fair!"

Seige stood up, laughing softly. "Come on Lilly, you'd better get home, it's nearly time for dinner."

"Oh no! Dinner!" Lilly shrieked, running off quickly. "I was supposed to make dinner tonight!"

Seige watched the girl skitter back to her house. "I've got to get out of this place," he grumbled.

Well after the sun had gone down Seige finally used the key the old lady had given him and he walked into the house. "Lady's pretty trusting," he muttered before closing and locking the door.

"I knew you wouldn't do anything."

Seige nearly jumped right out of his skin when he heard the voice of the old lady who had helped him three months earlier. "You're back a little sooner than I thought you'd be."

"I got the bag I needed and got back sooner than I'd said, so?"

"So nothing, I'm just glad I can leave now."

The silver haired woman shook her finger at Seige. "Oh no you don't, my three months isn't up yet, and the deal was for you to stay for three months, no matter when I got back! So for the next day or so I want you to tell me your life's story."

"You're crazy," growled Seige, turning to open the door back up and leave. "I stayed, three months or not, now I'm leaving." He turned the doorknob, but the door didn't open. It wasn't locked, it just wouldn't open.

"Sit your butt in a chair and tell your story!" The old woman demanded. "You won't be able to leave this house until you do." Seige sat, but he didn't say anything and that made the woman laugh shocking Seige. "Do you not remember how to speak?"

"It is hard for me," Seige said, "to talk about myself."

"Perhaps if I ask questions? Will that help you out?"

"Perhaps Madam Kioli."

"Just Kioli, I don't like 'Madam', makes me feel old and while I look it, I sure don't feel it… less you call me 'Madam', so none of that!" The old lady, Kioli, stopped her rambling she found she started to do and pondered for a moment. "Okay, first off then! When you first came to this village you were wounded and looked as if you were being hunted or tracked, why were you wounded, who was hunting you?"

"People who dislike me hunted me," Seige answered simply, "a few of their minions spotted me, one wasn't a bad fighter, he sliced my side, it got infected, and I didn't have medicine."

"I know of your wounds, I treated them," Kioli smiled, ready to bonk this 'Seige' on the head. "Why do they dislike you?"

"Are you sure you wish to know? They may pound you with questions and I do not know whether or not you'd protect my whereabouts."

"Nobody can make this old bird talk!" Kioli grinned. "Not when she doesn't want to and I wouldn't be wanting to!"

Seige shrugged figuring he might as well tell somebody, what could he lose? He really didn't have much of anything, well… as long as you didn't look in his backpack and two large sacks that he carried with him, currently all three were sitting in a room given to him by Kioli. "Guess my occupation," Seige mumbled.

"Oh, you're an honest hardworking farm boy!" She cracked up at the look on Seige's face. "I'm kidding! I suspect you do things that are… not that legal?"

"Yes," Seige smirked, "my buddies and I used to rob people, rich snobs who needed to be taught a lesson, the kind of people would literally step all over others. So it wasn't exactly legal, and we were dumb idiots for doing it, but once we started we didn't stop, we all loved the thrill, breaking into things, trying not to get caught, and we were good at our work. It became a full time profession for all of us."

"Where are you buddies now?"

Seige looked down, the firelight flickering on his face. "They're dead."

"How did they die?"

"Maro and Kon died first," Seige talked slowly at this point, remembering what happened vividly in his mind. "We were cornered, the last person we stole from was right on our trail and they caught us, Maro and Kon, we yelled at them to run… they must have been drunk or something… they stayed and they fought. I was turning the corner to help them, to see why they weren't coming, to help fight, when Kon fell to the ground with Maro." Seige paused. "If Drake hadn't pulled me away at just that time he did, I would be dead as well."

"Drake?"

"The second member of the party, there are only four of us… or were."

"And he is gone too?"

"Arrow pierced him while we were running away, trying to get to our horses… It was a fatal wound, I knew I couldn't do anything, so I found a place where I knew we'd have enough time to hide, they wouldn't find us for at least a day."

+++++++++++++++

"And I'll get you better, and Maro and Kon'll come back, and—"

"Seige, stop kidding yourself," Drake joked, resting against a tree, blood dripping down him. "I'm done for and you have to get out of here or you are too."

"No! Don't say that, you're going to be fi—"

"You know what I wanted to do, before I died?" Drake asked, interrupting his friend. "I wanted to do something really wonderful."

Seige could tell his friend wished to tell him, before… before he couldn't. "What is it, Drake? What do want to do?"

"I wanted," Drake said, speaking as if it was over, and accepting that it was. "I wanted to go to Etea Arena and purchase a," Drake coughed.

"A what?" Seige asked, having no clue what his friend was talking about.

"A Drakkin."

Seige waited for more to come, but Drake didn't continue. "That's great, you'll go right after you get better, and then—"

"Not getting better," Drake said, voice barely a whispering, "but Seige, can I ask you something? Will you do something for me?"

Seige frowned, he didn't want to accept Drake dying, his best friend since he was two. "What is it?" The burgundy haired young man managed to ask, knowing he'd better hear it before Drake couldn't say it.

"Go to Etea Arena," Drake paused, having to take deep breaths to try and finish his request, "and buy a Drakkin, raise it, and train it, for me?"

Seige was shocked, he wasn't expecting that as a request, but his friend was dying and he couldn't just say no. "Yes, I will go, I promise."

"Offer them tons, Drakkin are precious creatures," he grabbed Seige's collar, "do not ask… do not! Do not ask for a female."

"I won't!" Seige nearly yelled, but he remembered the search going on for them.

"Good, and if you can, read all about them."

"I will."

Drake's eyes seemed about to roll back into his head, to get the cold stare in them that they usually receive when movement is no longer possible. "Thank you," he hissed out and then Seige's friends slow, wheezing breathing ceased to fill the room with its sound.

+++++++++++++++

Kioli sat back in her comfy chair. "So he wishes for you to raise a Drakkin just like he wanted to."

"Yes," Seige mumbled.

"And you are headed there now, I presume?"

Again Seige answered with a simple, "Yes."

"I'm going with you!"

Seige had to think to get what she just said. "What? No!"

Kioli grinned. "You don't even know how to get there, do you?"

"Well," Seige looked down and scratched his head slightly, "no, but—"

"Portals are involved too."

"Uh…"

Kioli zipped around the house, throwing this in suitcases and muttering about how they'd get there. "We'll probably have to head to…" she mumbled, droning on while completely ignoring Seige's wishes to talk.

"Hey!" Seige yelled, trying to get the older woman to stop her running around in circles trying to find things.

Kioli laughed at him. "You can't change it! I'm going! Besides, I've always wanted to go there and I know how to go there and I have things that you can offer for a Drakkin. We leave tomorrow! Get some sleep!"

"But—"

"Go to SLEEP!"

+++++++++++++++

Seige could hear Kioli getting around well into the night, it was the next day already when he heard her go to sleep. "I hope this works," he muttered sadly, "I hope I get a Drakkin for Drake, and that I can raise it, and train it."

He rolled over on the small bed, staring at the three bags he had next to it on the other side, against the wall. "That's not enough from what I've gathered about Drakkin, so the lady helping with my offering will be good, but… Oh I don't know!"

Suddenly something stopped just outside his door. "I hear talking to oneself!" Kioli growled. "When I shouldn't hear anything at all! I know you don't snore! So I say again: Go to SLEEP!"

Seige, not the type to raise his voice, especially to an elderly lady, grumbled and went to sleep.
