supabowlgang

Beginnings

It happened on Super Bowl Sunday, '85, in Camarillo, California.  The teams that played are long forgotten (San Francisco 49ers with Joe Montana and Roger Craig vs. Miami Dolphins) , yet the memories of that sun-drenched day remain vivid.

It was the day the supabowlgang was born.

Seven of the supabowlgang were keiki o ka `âina ("children of the land", i.e., born and raised in Hawai`i);some are also known as Buddha-heads on The Mainland.

Da Mainlan' had sucked them away from the islands.  Some by choice, others by default. All were casualties of Hawai`i's "Brain Drain". In time, they came to embrace California as their home away from home, but Hawai`i and their island identities have not been forsaken.

Three of the supabowlgang, by accident of birth, got a jump on California living by being born and raised in Southern California.

The common denominator:  all real nice folks.

"The word "genius" isn't applicable in football.
A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein."

~ Joe Theisman, NFL football quarterback and sports analyst
