What would I do if I could write the scripts to Dawson's Creek?

May 24, 2000

An enjoyable experience this week with some nice tongue-in-cheek, we-know-you-know-this-is-a-television-show humor that merits 7 Flushes. Who will Joey choose is the dominant question this week. Her choice is made all the harder as she is Gail's bridesmaid for the upcoming wedding of Mitch and Gail. She and Dawson spend lots of time together, but their relationship is not on the best grounds. As for Dawson and Pacey, they do not seem committed to reconciling. Andie stops by Dawson's house to get him to sign her yearbook, and she tells him that he should come to Pacey's going away party. Dawson asks what Andie means, and Andie explains that Pacey is going away for three months; he is sailing down to the Florida Keys. Dawson says that he does not want to go to Pacey's party and that even if he did, he couldn't go, because that night is his parents' rehearsal dinner. When that night comes, Dawson and Joey are both at the rehearsal dinner; however, Joey seems very upset. Dawson tells Joey that she shouldn't have come, because she obviously wants to be at Pacey's going away party; however, Joey never knew about the party, yet she doesn't let Dawson know that she wasn't invited. Joey explains to Dawson that he is part of her life and that his family has always been there for him. She says that if Dawson hadn't threatened to terminate her relationship with him then she might have chosen differently. A few moments later Joey is informed by Dawson that Bessie called and that Joey has to stop by the store on her way home.

In the meantime at Pacey's farewell party, Andie, Jack, Jen, Pacey, and Grams sit around. Grams wonders why everyone looks so sad, and they explain that love is hard and that their past year has been romantically turbulent. Grams says that we need to give love a chance. She recounts the story of how when she was 18 or so, she met a man who she instantly fell for. Unfortunately, he was going away to fight in a war the next day so she was too scared to do anything that night. However, Grams did not want any regrets, so the next day she got on an airplane and went to San Francisco where the guy she met was setting sail. She shouted his name and proclaimed her feelings for him in front of the entire navy boat. They then shared a kiss. Jen says that her grandfather never fought in a war. Grams says that this man was not Jen's grandfather, but that he was a man who she shared one kiss with. This man died four years later in the war, and Grams then got married two years later to Jen's grandfather. But Grams has no regrets.

As the evening progresses, Joey passes her wall on the way to the store. On the wall the words "Ask me to stay" are written in big letters. Pacey appears and explains that he had Bessie call Dawson's house. Pacey asks Joey to ask him to stay in Capeside, but Joey says, "I can't ask you to stay." Pacey is upset, but he realizes from Gram's inspirational speech that he has to give his love one final shot. He shows up at the wedding the next day to see Joey. Pacey says that Joey needs to make up her mind and that the time has come for her to pick a man. Joey says that she still cannot go with Pacey and that she needs to stay here. Dawson then comes over and says, "I see all the members of the triangle present and accounted for." Joey gets uncomfortable and begins to leave. Pacey asks Joey, "Jo, I don't even get a good-bye?" to which Joey simply responds, "Good-bye, Pacey." Pacey and Dawson are now all alone. Dawson explains that things will never be the same between them. Dawson then congratulates Pacey on his exciting trip to Florida. Pacey then congratulates Dawson on "winning" Joey. Dawson is surprised to hear about Joey's decision. The two depart.

As for Jen, Jack, Andie, and Grams, they are heading back from Pacey's party when they decide that love trumps everything. Jen decides that she has to confess to Henry that she still loves him. Unfortunately, Henry has already left for football camp. Grams does not let this stop them. Grams gets on the highway and after a night of driving, finds Henry's bus. Jen gets out of the car, finds Henry, and confesses her feelings for him in front of everyone on the bus. Jen then says that she loves him and that she is the reason they haven't had sex, but she hopes to be with him when he returns from camp. Yeah, them! Having completed her mission, Jen encourages Jack to go after Ethan. Grams then drivesup to Boston to find Ethan's prep school. Jack soon finds Ethan at which point, he takes him and kisses him in public (I give the kiss a 6, the first man-to-man kiss and they barely lock lips). Too bad for Jack that Ethan has gotten back together with his ex-boyfriend. Jack soon realizes, "It's very clear to me that I just inducted myself into the halls of the permanently pathetic." They all then return home.

Back in Capeside, Dawson and Joey talk; however, as they discuss their plans for bonding during the summer, Joey is on the verge of crying. Dawson sees this and tells her that she has to confess her feelings for Pacey. He realizes that the words he spoke during his parents' wedding that love means "you can forgive everything" may not apply to him and Joey. Joey says that she cannot lose her friendship with Dawson, and Dawson only responds that she has to be with Pacey. He says, "I can't tell you that it's a colossal mistake and that all roads lead back to me." Joey leaves. Dawson is left alone on the docks, and we do not know what will become of Dawson and Joey. From a distance, Jensees Dawson all alone. Dawson soon returns to his room where he sees Jen, Jack, and Andie sitting on his bed. They have brought videos to watch with him. Dawson does not want to watch with them, but he gets interrupted:
Jen: I think that the words "I want to be alone right now" are used far too often around here.
Andie: Kind of ranks right up there with "can we talk?"
Jack: And there's those countless references towards all things Freud and Spielberg. Jen: Yeah, I'm pretty sure of it. We're not in Capeside anymore, Toto. This is some alternate reality where our intellects are sharper, our quips are wittier, and our hearts are repeatedly broken while faintly in the background some soon to be out-of-date contempo-pop music plays.
Dawson: Then why does it hurt so much?
Andie: Because our pain makes us real Dawson. But we can't do it alone. None of us can.

Finally, we return to Pacey and Joey. Joey appears on the docks, looking for Pacey (sorry for this dangling participle). She has somehow changed clothing since she left the wedding. Pacey is not at the dock, but he soon finds her waiting there. A brief conversation in which Pacey tells Joey that she cannot stop him from going to Florida, that she has nothing to offer him. Joey responds.
Joey:I don't want to stop you Pacey and I don't want to stop Dawson and I don't want to be stopped, not by either of you, not by anyone. See, I mean that's what this whole year has been about, we've been trying to stop each other from moving on, from growing up. But not you, you're different and you've challenged me every step of the way and you've been there every step of the way.
Pacey: Jo, departure time is in t-minus thirty seconds so if there's a point, I suggest you get to it.
Joey: I think I'm in love with you.
Pacey: You think or you know?
Joey: I know. I've known it since the moment you kissed me and maybe even before that and scary as it is I don't want to deny it anymore Pacey. I don't want to run from it and I don't want to let it run from me.
Pacey: So what are we gonna do here Jo?
Joey: I want to come with you.
Pacey: What? Are you crazy?
Joey: I want to stop standing still I want to move forward.
Pacey: What about Bessie and the B&B? They need you.
Joey: Not as much as I need you.
After a brief discussion about what she'll wear as she hasn't packed any clothing, the two sail off into the sunset, literally.

END OF SEASON:

May 17, 2000

A pretty enjoyable if oh-come-on-this-would-never-happen 7 Flush episode. It's time for the Junior Prom at Capeside High. Who will go with who? Henry and Jen are a given, although Jen makes Henry promise that he will not have sex with her. She says that if they decide now then nothing will be uncomfortable later. Dawson asks Joey in an attempt to rekindle their friendship. Besides, they made a pact when they were younger that if neither of them was with another, they would go together. Andie hints to Pacey that she would be willing to go with him, but Pacey doesn't ask her out until he learns that Dawson is going with Joey. Jack wants to go with his friend Ethan. He goes to buy his ticket and the girl selling tickets, Barbara Johns, says that because the theme of the prom is couples that two guys cannot go together. Jack is upset by this and shares his feelings with Andie, Joey, and Dawson. Dawson proposes an alternative prom at his parent's restaurant. This prom "is not about who you bring, but about who you are." They all agree, and many people would rather go to this alternative prom.

Prom night soon comes, and Dawson picks up Joey. Joey has made Dawson promise to not bring a corsage, so he brings her a pair of diamond earrings that he borrowed from his mom for the night. Joey puts them on. Everyone shows up at the prom, and you can imagine how tense the situation between Dawson and Pacey is. While Dawson is off somewhere, Joey asks Pacey to a dance. While they are dancing, Pacey says he does not like the earrings she is wearing. She says they aren't hers. He says that the bracelet she is wearing is much more suited to her: "It's not showy or gaudy, just simple, elegant, beautiful." Joey is touched by his comment and says that this bracelet belonged to her mom. He says he knew that and that she already told him this and that he remembers everything he tells her. The two are so perfect as they dance together, but Dawson sees them dancing and storms out of the room. Joey follows him. He yells at her and says that this was supposed to be the perfect evening and that Pacey wasn't supposed to be at Dawson's alternative prom. Joey says that she isn't some prize to win and that she doesn't want to be put in a position to choose a man. Dawson says, "You have to pick somebody, Joey. [Tonight was supposed to be about us and] I just wanted you to remember what you'd miss if you picked him." Dawson then says that the night was supposed to end with a kiss, "that's how the evening was supposed to end" so he kisses her and leaves.

Andie realizes that Pacey still loves Joey and tells him that he needs to tell her so. Pacey says he is sorry for being such a bad date to her. He confesses that when he asked her to prom, it was because he thought he wanted to go with her, but it was really because he was jealous of Dawson and Joey. Andie says she understands and will always be Pacey's friend. They discuss the summer and Pacey says that he is going to sail his boat, True Love, on a three month trip to somewhere.

Jen and Henry are enjoying themselves until they discuss the summer. Jen says that she has so many plans about mini-trips they can take this summer. Henry says that he can't go on them, because he's going to football camp for eight weeks. Jen announces that "whatever slim chance there was of us having sex is gone." Henry says that he thought they had no chance of sex and she explains that there was. The two continue fighting and Jen says that if Henry had thought about her that he would have considered her in his decision to go to camp (I think she's being a little dramatic). He says he is going and that if she leaves him again then they are permanently over. She says fine.

Ethan and Jack are having their own little rendezvous. Jack is too ashamed to dance at prom and is uncomfortable around Ethan. Jack says that he is so nervous about the two of them, because he doesn't know what type of relationship they share. Why can't Ethan just kiss him. Ethan says that he doesn't think Jack is ready for a kiss yet. They are standing in an empty train station and Ethan says that if Jack wants to kiss him then he should do as much. Jack can't so Ethan leaves.

Because the prom is at Dawson's parents's restaurant, Gail and Mitch act as chaperones. They are enjoying themselves until Gail asks if she can spend the night with Mitch. Mitch says no, and that he cannot stand the games Gail plays with him and that she needs to decide where their relationship stands. But I wonder to myself, she wanted to get back with him all last season, and only didn't because Mitch said no.

The day after prom, Joey goes to Dawson to return the earrings. He is sitting outside and for some reason they go inside. The two walk in and see Gail sitting on one knee, proposing marriage to Mitch. The two plan on remarrying.

QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: [Saying you're not going to have sex] is what you say to alleviate the pressure and make it seem spontaneous when you actually do it. Of course, there was a chance [of sex], it's our prom. --Jen to Henry.
NEXT WEEK: Season finale: a wedding, Joey chooses, and Pacey prepares to spend his summer sailing.

May 10, 2000

An exciting and adventurous 7 Flush episode that I enjoyed, but I still wonder why the Joey-Pacey thing upsets Dawson so much. It's not as though he had a claim to her. The episode begins with Dawson looking at the picture of him and Joey that he recently received from Aunt Gwen. We then turn to Joey in school. She needs to decide where to eat lunch. She can't sit with Dawson, can't sit with Pacey, almost sits with Jack but sees that Andie is with him so they're out. Joey ends up by herself. After school, Joey sits in front of the wall that Pacey gave to her paint a few episodes back. Dawson comes by and says that he and she should try and be friends again. She says that all she wants to do is paint her wall, and he says that the invitation to hang out with him is permanent.

It's now the annual boat regatta. Pacey is being sponsored by the Leery's Fish House. Gail asks Dawson if he is OK with this fact, and Dawson says he is OK. Dawson even brings the Leery banner that Pacey will fly above his boat to Pacey. Dawson tells Pacey that he's still angry with him, but that Pacey should still be in the regatta. Why does Dawson say this? because he plans to enter the regatta. He borrows a boat from Jack and Andie's father (keep in mind that Andie is experiencing Dawson's pain over the Pacey-Joey relationship) and gets sponsored by the Potter Bed & Breakfast. Joey doesn't like the idea of supporting sides, because it may seem hurtful, but Bessie wants the advertising for the B&B. Nonetheless, when she bumps into Pacey she feels the need to explain why her business is supporting Dawson. Pacey is angry that the first words that Joey has spoken in two weeks to Pacey involve Dawson. She then asks Pacey to drop out of the race. Pacey says he cannot drop out, because he would then follow Dawson's script. The script is a two-way losing street for Pacey: if Pacey drops out of the boat race then Dawson gets to do what he wants, and if Pacey wins the boat race, then he beats the boat of the Potter B&B. Joey then asks Pacey to talk with Dawson. Pacey says good-bye to Joey by saying, "Hey Potter, it was nice talkin' to you" and the way he said this line was really cool. Anyway, Pacey goes to see Dawson and the two fight. They reach no agreement about anything. Dawson says that he has history with Joey, but Pacey says that 15 years of PG movies, a year long relationship followed by a break-up at the first crisis, and Dawson's rejection of Joey is no history. Dawson says that Pacey was a mistake for Joey and that Pacey is "only interested in girls you can save or screw."

Will visits Andie. He tries to explain to her that she should forgive Pacey, because things need to move forward. Andie says that Pacey didn't forgive her when she slept with a guy at the mental institution. Will then says good-bye to Andie. Will has been accepted into a prestigious school named Rowley and is leaving Capeside.

As for the regatta, Jack and Dawson are having trouble on Jack's dad's boat, the Carpe Diem, until Mitch volunteers to help them out. It's now the day of the regatta, and Pacey and Will take the lead but as everyone approaches the finish line, Dawson steers his boat in such a way that they force Pacey to decide whether to give up the lead or get in an accident. Pacey decides to give up the lead at which point Dawson wins the race. However, because of the way he steered the boat, Dawson's boat is disqualified. We would hope that Pacey would win, but because he steered off course, he comes in fifth place. Pacey runs over to Dawson to yell at him, and Joey enters the fight scene. Pacey and Dawson clash. Joey says that none of them are worth all of the hate that is being generated amongst them. Pacey goes back to his boat. Joey runs off and cries. Dawson comes after her and tells him that he's glad Pacey kissed her, because now he realizes how much he doesn't want to lose her. Joey takes this comment and says, "You don't want me, Dawson. You said it yourself, you just don't want to lose me." She tells Dawson that what she wants right now is to not be loved.

That night, Joey is at her wall trying to decide what to do with it. Pacey appears and they discuss for a little what Joey will do with the wall. Joey regrets that the lease on the wall is almost up and that she should paint it now so she does something with it. Pacey eventually asks Joey, "If it weren't for Dawson, could you ever love me like that, like a soulmate?" Joey responds by saying that she doesn't want to be forced to choose. Pacey says, "I understand. I do. There are no ultimatums here." He then says that he'll renew the lease for the wall so that Joey can decide what to paint. He then goes to his boat and tears a plaque with the name "True Love" off of his boat and throws it into the water. He sits down on a bench, and we see a hand fetch the plaque from the water. Is it Dawson? Is it Joey? No, it's Andie. She has come to tell Pacey that she can't hate him and that sheunderstands his behavior. We then shift camera to Dawson's room . Dawson is hanging out when Joey pops through the window. She tells Dawson that they should watch "E.T." Dawson says that this movie makes her sad, but she says that the end of the movie is predictable and comforting because ET says, "I'll always be here." Joey wants to know that someone will always be here. They sit down to watch the movie.

As this week's episode passed, Henry has been standing outside of Jen's house with a sign begging for forgiveness. He stood outside for hours and stays begging for reunion even during rainstorms. Grams says that Henry may have been wrong for forcing himself on her but that Jen should finally forgive him. Jen finally forgiv es him one evening, and she is so touched by how great he is that she falls asleep besides him on a roof somewhere. She returns to Grams who thinks that Jen and Henry had sex, and when Grams learns that they haven't, she is so proud of the maturity that Jen has gained. Finally this week, Gail and Mitch back together again.

WITTER'S WORDS OF WISDOM: Don't sleep with your friends. Believe me it never works out as well as you think. --Pacey
NEXT WEEK:Andie tells Pacey to go after Joey. Dawson stays angry when Joey tries to reconcile everyone.
