Pat's Review:

It all swirls together….one big blur of music and sound and smiles and people and lights….it’s all music….it’s all life….a hurricane of life….tonight it sweeps me up and takes me away to some other land….i can’t much control it, my timing is not quite right….tonight big plans and lots of practice are useless, they confuse us more than they center us….but it doesn’t matter….they’ll be more shows….for this night, at least, it’s more fun to lose control and stand in the middle of the hurricane than it is to keep control and be left standing on the outside. Oh, and I remember that “Galusch” was really awesome too. One of the best we ever played, it was like a hurricane…

**** Chris tells the story of how he wrote this song in a dream (where he found several middle school boys set up playing music in a NY subway station and joined them for a jam which eventually turned into Pickle Bath. Upon waking he realised something new had been born, namely the tradition of the "Pickle Bath Stew" in which he and Gregg Sanford walk from door to door at the dorms with a recycling bin filled with pickle juice and ask for contributions, anything goes, to be added to the bucket, until someone is so grossed out by the contents of the bucket that they actually "hurl in the pickle bath stew.") * w/ Eric Napier on guitar
$ w/ extended jam and someone in the audience bringing in trippy lights to shine on the band... Pat, Eric, & Chris all bring the dude
~ Pat brings the dude, ian hits the hithat on the last beat of the intro, which is a very funny joke that he used to play (no pun) on us back in the day. actually, its not really a joke, because a joke has a setup, a delivery, and a punch line. (it's got fucking cheese, fucking lettuce...)
@ Eric, Chis & Brian bring the dude
+ w/the whole band bringing the dude at various times.....when Ian brings the dude, the dude brings the Stomp
^ extended, with pretty jam
! w/ Eric looping the dude
% dedicated to "the mushroom kids." There was this one part where the jam sort of suddenly died out but instead of bringing the dude, Chris put his mouth entirely around the microphone and suddenly the room was filled with a wall-shaking vibration of om. (this jam was the jam.)
**##$ Between sets, Chris' younger brother Adam tells him to stop saying "Yeah, Wassup, Wassup" over and over again, because he "sounds really fucked up"
**##$$ Adam proceeds to pass out on the couch for the remainder of the show, because, in fact, he is "really fucked up."
Otras : Somewhere in there there was an EFF chant (dedicated to eff) where chris tried to get everyone to get naked and dance around like animals. (failed.) At one point Robert the maintenance man came in and boogied down like a madman. He was later reported to have said "Damn, them white boys jam all night."

Chris' Review:

I remember being in Palm Court right before we played and trying to get everything organized. I hadn't really seen brian or ian, but heard they were ready. I was walking around with my sister telling everyone i saw "It's go time!" Went to the room, it was too bright. turned off lights. plugged in shit. room felt cold and empty and strange. tried to fill with ambient sounds. remembered we wanted to start with Best Band Ever, switched to ambient sounds in f minor. people started coming in. started playing. BBE sounded extra funky to me, like some electric 70's shit. earl felt wicked and evil on organ and extra long C section. looked up during lion's song, was happy to see room full of dancing hippies and nuevo collegians. Evelyn's Kitchen felt good like some barnyard stomp for us country hillbilly floridians. At some point Rene brought the dude on shaker. Ian was not doing well by the end, but most of us failed to notice (sorry dude.) decided to go out with butterflies, felt good to hear pat playing the little melody over the instrumental break in the chorus. ended song, put down guitar, turned off amps, wondered "but is it really the end??"

Pat's Review:

During this show my bandmates learned a lesson that I learned during Halloween PCP 1999. I can’t say what that lesson is, as one must experience this lesson in order to learn it. On to the show…..

The Phishbowl looked nice. We hung a bunch of fish up and had some rainbow rope lights behind Chris.

For the 2nd straight year in a row, Chris set up all his keyboard equipment way before the show started. And for the 2nd straight year Chris walked into the room and his keyboard equipment was NOT set up. Poor Chris! After some minor adjustments, Chris began to make some sounds. The band joined in, and before we knew it the Best Band Ever was rocking the Phishbowl.

This BBE felt tight. Totally jamming, the boys were back in town! I was jumping up and down while playing, just so happy to be back playing with the boys again. The buildup part of BBE is always fun and I was jumping up and down like a little kid. Unfortunately, everyone sat down through the whole song. So, after BBE ends I make some wiseass comments about getting permits from the cops that allow everyone to get up and dance. Definitely the most relaxed I’ve ever felt speaking into a microphone in front of a crowd. That trend would continue throughout the weekend as I just couldn’t shut up.

Earl was rockin’. We almost fell asleep in practice the night before trying over and over again to get the song right, so it was good to have it all turn out OK. People got up and danced. Nice extended C section. The C jam was one big orgy of dancing, smiling people. I tried to get Sara to come and play trumpet during the trippy part of Earl, but she didn’t see me. Too bad, I would have much rather had her on trumpet than Miles Davis. More on Miles later….

Evelyn’s was nice. Just swaying around and singing aloud and smiling at everyone. Lion’s Song kicked up the energy in the room. I was filled with joy. I love watching people smile and dance and be happy. Unfortunately, the distortion setting on my pedal was totally f-ed, so I botched the beginning of the solo. Luckily, I fixed that by the next night.

The PeePee jam kind of killed the momentum we had built, but, hey, when ya gotta go, ya gotta go.

Bifnaki was ruined by Miles Davis. “Miles Davis” is some kid who used to live at the 47th St. house. The funny thing is, I specifically asked him not to play with us before we went on, but apparently Chris had told him that it was okay. I was not so happy with Miles. He was a fine musician, but he soloed over everyone. I get 2 days a year to play with TCR, and I’m sorry, but I want to play with TCR, not some random kid who wants to be in front of a crowd. I’m not so big on someone who jumps up and just starts soloing. I kept doing the “cut” sign to Chris, trying to get him to take the microphone away from Miles, but BabyReece didn’t see me. I was very not happy that I couldn’t hear Chris or Erock. Bifnaki is kind of our “tag-team” song where we play off of the weird noises that the other is making. During Bifnaki, I want to hear some trippy keyboards, some pounding drums, some funky gui-tar and some bumpin’ bass. I DO NOT want to hear some whack-off trumpet solo drowning out everything else. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Mr. Charlie was a good way to get some energy going after that Bifnaki. The distortion problem on my pedal meant no punch to my solos, but I had a good time playing around with the 12 bars anyway. Someone later told me how excited they were that we played Mr. C because it was one of their favorite Dead songs, so I’m glad we played it.

Stomp was great. People were freaking, and we all had fun. Miles Davis tried to join us, but I finally got Chris to take the mic away. I saw EFF’s brother and started an EFF chant, but apparently EFF drank too much too fast, and was at home asleep while we were chanting his name and trying to get him to get naked. Oh well, it brought a smile to his brother’s face, at least.

Mucus Men was good. Keith B. came up and started talking to Ian in the middle of this. I really think that was not so helpful for Ian at that point. Too much stimuli, if you know what I’m saying. I think it hastened the end of our set, but I guess that was what was meant to be. I got to go out and enjoy the last hour and a half of PCP, so every cloud has a silver lining.

Butterflies ended the show. Ian tried to stop it in the middle, but we wouldn’t let him. I looked at Ian at one point and noticed that he wasn’t looking so good. Chris extended the instrumental section, and in my head I was saying “dude! Cut it out! Ian is not doing good! Let’s just get to the end and finish!”, but unfortunately Chris does not have the power of ESP. I thought Chris had noticed Ian’s sickly state and was extending the song anyway, but I found out later that Chris had no clue. Ian continued on like the true rockstar he is, and we finished up on a nice note. I remember making eye contact with everyone I could and smiling and dancing. That was the nice part about both reunion shows, just sitting back and looking at people and smiling at them and dancing “with” them.

I looked up at the clock as Butterflies was ending, and noticed that it was 4:20. How fitting. I wished everyone a happy 4:20 and thanked them for coming. Another one bites the dust…

Overall, this show was alright, but the real action was on Saturday night. I think that perhaps the wonderfulness of last year’s PCP performance spoiled us and set our expectations too high. Our jams were very ambient on Friday, and I enjoyed just kind of sitting back and listening to everything. BBE and Earl were off the hook, though. It was great to see all our friends, and to play together again. Lots of smiles all around. It could have been better, but that doesn’t really matter at this point. What matters is that we all had lots of fun, and as my elementary school gym teacher used to say, “if you had fun, you won.”

TCR @ The 47th Street House
May 24, 2003 - Last Damn Jam

Showtime: 1:30am - 4:20am (no joke!)

Funky Bitch, Bifnaki, Lion's Song, Medicine*, Earl > Bubblehouse > Drum Solo > EFF > Voodoo Stomp > Chameleon > Voodoo Stomp, Best Band Ever*, Evelyn's Kitchen, Butterflies, Mystery Jam, Michael Stipe, Lion's Song, Wolfman's Brother > Voodoo Stomp > Bubblehouse, Cold Water**, Butterflies***

* dedicated to Meagan Mitchell
** Put put his guitar down and joined the people singin' and swayin' in front of the band
*** Pat brings the dude "to make up for last year" and introduces the band one by one to thunderous applause
NOTE: entire show without "miles davis" on trumpet and flute, or congas, or anything else for that matter due to some "advanced planning" by Pat. ("Oh Chris, what's that? Furry isn't coming out tonight? Okay, so I'll just put these congas upstairs then...")
ALSO NOTE: beginning of show with "extra pep" due to some more "advanced planning" by Pat. (thanks dude.)

Chris' Review:

Funky Bitch was an interesting and different (no Jam > Bifnaki?) way to start a show. ("Alright boys, blues in C") Pat was ripping up the opening riff and wrestled the fuck out of the solo. Bifnaki was a long nice meandering with Erock dropping some cool shit on guitar. felt like we were kind of exploring our collective imiganitions while waiting for more people to fill up the house. At some point EFF showed up to an immediate EFF chant, complete with samba whistle (a gift for Chris from EFF) and some freaky moves by eff, including pouring vodka down his pants. I think it might have been the most intense EFF ever, except maybe the famous Flip Into The Bay version... As soon as he was done and had all his clothes back on we busted right back into another eff chant for him (or was it for the ladies????). I think i actually remembered all the words to Evelyn's Kitchen BOTH of these nights. Lots of Afrobeat teases as a little joke between me and brian ("dude, Karl Denson, he's like a BARON.") Good old Chameleon. Pat thinks we played Mucus Men. I think we didn't. who knows. As the night went on Maggie Ray showed up with a big old bottle of Mr. Boston's Premium Vodka and started pouring shots down our throats while we played (read: Rock Stars.) After Evenlyn's Kitchen we all kind of looked at each other and were like "THIS IS IT, the Final Version of Butterflies, the Final TCR song ever, The LAST DAMNN JAM, etc" but once it was over everyone was yelling for more and we (minus Ian of course) were like "hey, why not?" More shots and more eff dancing and more repeted songs ensued. Seemed like we wound up putting bubblehouse in the middle of just about every song with a jam in it. Cold Water was a great great good old fashion american drunk ass sing along moment, it's too bad Young Drew wasn't there to see it. Somehow we got through Michael Stipe without fucking up, despite not playing it in two years or whatever. (and yet we butchered freaking butterflies the night before...) I tried to make a joke by singing the chorus of Long December over the last chorus of Butterflies, but no one seemed to have a clue what i was talking about. I kept having this "all fall down together" feeling while we played that last Butterflies, there at the 47th street house, getting drunk with all the true Antennaheads and having a retarded good time. Then Pat stretched out the ending riff and i said something about "last damn note" and we hit the last chord (Buterflies > Wall Of Sound?) then we took a nice (vodka covered) retirement bow and it was all over.

(or is it?????)

(j/k)

(or am I???)

Pat's Review:

Cocaine is a helluva drug
