Venus Transit
Venus is a planet rich in mythology from many different traditions. It is not surprising that the Astronomy Club members joined others in Singapore to observe this planet as it drifted across the face of the sun. The Venus Transit of 8 June was clearly the astronomical event of the year. We were blessed with clear skies throughout the 6-hour-12min- event. To observe the transit, a pair of binoculars was used to project the image onto a piece of white paper. The C-14 telescope was fitted with a solar filter while images of the sun were captured with a camera. Several teachers, with their children, students and non-academic staff braved the hot afternoon sun to make sure that they were not left out. Some discussed the Science and Math of Transits while many thought It was worthwhile to see the black disc of Venus against the white disc of the sun.
