The DAR Schools

The Independence Hall Chapter is proud of our special projects, especially our work with the DAR Schools.  In addition to saving Campbell's Soup labels for these schools, we contribute regularly to their libraries, and we provide special gifts for the needy children at Christmastime.

Crossnore School:  In Crossnore, North Carolina, this school serves as a residential placement and provides life skills training to help students to live independently.  Learn more about the Crossnore School.

Hillside SchoolThis Marlborough, Massachusetts, school enrolls 80 boys in grades 5-9.  Please visit the Hillside School web site for more information.

Hindman Settlement SchoolLocated in Hindman, Kentucky, this is a non-denominational school specializing in work with dyslexia.

Kate Duncan Smith SchoolNamed for an Honorary State Regent and Honorary Vice President General, this school in Grant, Alabama, services more than 1,000 students and strives for academic excellence.  Visit the KDS web site for more information.

Tamassee SchoolThis is a boarding school in Tamassee, South Carolina, that provides a home and an education for needy, dependent children.  The elementary school is for grades K-5, while the middle and high schools serve grades 6-12.

Berry College:  Originally founded as a boarding high school in Mount Berry, Georgia, in 1902, which later closed, the 83 acres given by the founder also became home to Berry College in 1926.  Today, the liberal arts program enrolls 1, 700 students and also provides a preschool program for about 170 youngsters.

The Independence Hall Chapter also donates to the Chemawa Indian School, a DAR-recognized school for students from around the country.  Chemawa, which opened in 1879, is a boarding high school which also runs PEP (Personal Education Program), an extended day program for at-risk youth.  For more information, write to:

Another school which our chapter supports is the St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota.  This school services primarily Lakota Sioux children and is a boarding school.  Our on-going collection of Campbell's soup can labels has already helped this school to obtain a number of materials, audio-visual equipment, and even a mini-van.  During the winter time, we also collect hats, mittens, and scarves to donate for the children's use.

The Independence Hall chapter took on a new project in the summer of 2003, that of refurbishing the Independence Park rose gardens. These gardens may be accessed from Walnut or Locust Streets between 4th and 5th; markers were placed by the NSDAR in 1971 in honor of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, and PSSDAR added a marker in 1976 for the celebration of the Bicentennial. Our work on these gardens continues with assistance from volunteers who are knowledgeable in horticulture.
