Tailoring Schools

Locations:

Chennai, Tirunelveli and Zilpa village (Maharashtra).

Purpose:

The Tailoring Schools were started to meet the needs of hundreds of young women (some of them illiterates and some widows). They were exhibiting a crying need for a way to develop some skill in order to be able to stand on their feet and face an inhospitable society. In addition to the imparting of tailoring skills, the students are presented with the gospel of Christ.

Methods:

The course is designed to teach the basic skills for sewing such as cutting, stitching, embroidery, etc. At the end of the course, the students write an examination and get a certificate for successfully completing the course. The students pay a normal fee which is much less than what the other private institutions charge. The students are provided with the material, thread, machines, etc. at no cost.

Duration:

Six months - meeting for half day sessions.

Progress:

Four years have gone by since the first Tailoring School was started in Chennai. Since then, nearly 400 young women have benefitted with a workable skill in tailoring.

Goal:

a) To help poor girls to learn the skill of tailoring and become self-reliant.
b) To make the project self-supported.
c) To start similar schools in many other needy areas.
