  Random Lyrics Trivia

These are the F.A.Q.'s directly from you and answered by Silver Jet.

1. Where did the name "Silver Jet" come from?

Luke came up with the name. He's always been into planes so there's some connection there. But it just sounded simple and cool.

2. How did you guys meet?

JEFF: Luke and I met in High School. We both played in bands and were into the same music. When we were recording the first Silver Jet demo, about 3 months and 3 shows after we had formed, we met Grant who was our engineer in the studio. Grant had overheard us talking about getting a full time drummer and offered to join the band. We jammed a few days later and he's been our drummer ever since.

GRANT: In the studio.

3. When are your birthdays?

JEFF: December 30th

LUKE: July 31st

GRANT: Mine is May 4th

4. Where are you originally from?

JEFF: I was born in Chicago, and moved to Santa Barbara in 7th grade, and to Los Angeles after graduating high school. Luke was born and raised in S.B. and moved to LA after high school as well. Grant was born in London and moved to LA with his family when he was like four or five.

GRANT: I'm from London England.

5. What instruments do you guys use on the road and in the studio?

GRANT: I have an endorsement with Ludwig drums. I own 2 sets - one I gig with and one I rehearse with. They are a little different, but equally as good. I also have a bunch of snare drums. I've sort of started a collection.

JEFF: I mostly play a Fender jazz bass live. Luke usually plays a Gibson ES335 live. Grant has Ludwig drums. We all own a lot of equipment which we use in the studio; we also borrow a lot of stuff from friends when we record.

6. How did you hook up with Dogstar?

GRANT: We hooked up with Dogstar through our agent initially, but that was only for one gig. We found out about the tour and basically expressed an interest to join them. The rest is history. Thanks to our manager, really, for making it happen.

JEFF: Dogstar needed a support act for their tour. We initially played just one show with them. I guess they figured we were cool and asked us to do the rest of the tour with them.

7. It's great that you guys understand the importance of the internet and you make a conscious effort to 'schmooze' with your fans. Are you surprised at the virtual community that has been created because of your music? Did it catch you off guard to have this kind of an effect on so many people?

LUKE: The fact that so many internet-using fans came at the end of the "Pull Me Up..." record was a bit surprising. It's very cool though.

JEFF: Yeah, I think it caught us all off guard a little bit. All of a sudden there were all these fan sites out there, and they were better than our virgin website because they were up to date and had so much more information. We were surprised that fans were taking as much initiative as they were. But it's been really inspiring, and it's really cool to be able to have a place where people can go at any time (and) find out what's going on with the band.

GRANT: I think it's great. I only wish our record had caught on and sold more. I think that the internet is really great, and if utilized cleverly, can be a very effective way of promoting and informing many people of one's band. Unfortunately, it hasn't become as important compared to radio airplay and video as well.

8. What's the connection to Adam Duritz/Counting Crows (in the thank-you bonus track)?

GRANT: He was the first person that wanted to sign our band, and it helped to create a nice little bidding war.

JEFF: Adam was just a genuine fan and he was really supportive of us before we had a deal. He offered to sign us to his label, but was totally understanding when we decided to with Virgin. So we just felt that he deserved some thanks.

9. How long has SJ been playing together, when/where did it all start?

JEFF: We've been together for six years. Our first show was luke's 21 birthday. It was at a place called the Ice Thai. It was a Thai food resturant/club, (only in LA right?). It was a really funny place. But there was a total scene there, and that was where we played our first show. That place closed less than a year later, so we have fond memories of Ice Thai and the formation of Silver Jet.

GRANT: Silver Jet was born for Luke's 21st birthday party July 31 '92. I didn't join the band until a few months later when I met Luke, Jeff and at that time Chris (Shifflet) in the studio (Sandbox) via Rick Parker (Sparkler) to work on their first demo tape. I was the engineer. After the session I told Luke that I also played drums blah blah blah…. They'd only had two gigs (with Eric Scodis - Imperial Drag fame) before I joined. (Webmaster note: Icky is now with The Tories.)

10. What are the musical influences of each band member?

JEFF: We all pretty much grew up listening to 60's 70's and 80's music. I know that's vague but we've all been into a lot of different stuff.

GRANT: I was influenced by English music of the 70's like Elton John, Queen, Mott the Hoople, Grace Jones, Roxy Music, Beatles and Stones (of course) The Who, Bad Company (big influence) Led Zeppelin (massive influence). I could keep going but you probably get the Idea.

LUKE: It's a little cliche' but my influence so all over the place that the answer to that questioned would have to be a bit unfocused. I grew up on bands like Kiss, Cheap Trick, and Aerosmith. Then, in the eighties, I started listening to bands like The Straycats and The Clash. I even had a few guilty pleasures like The Go-Gos and Missing Persons. And I come from music loving parents so of course I had a healthy diet of The Stones, Beatles, and other classics like that.

11. Are there any current bands that the guys like to listen to?

JEFF: I like Polar Bear, but I'm not sure how much the other guys like them.

GRANT: There are many bands that I listen to but none I feel like mentioning. I have no favorites.

LUKE: I've been so disillusioned with (commercial alternative) radio that I haven't been keeping up so much on that front. Disillusioned not jaded mind you. So I've been listening to a lot of Hip-Hop radio. Which has led me to buy a few of my new favorite records like W.C. "Just Clownin" and All Frum Tha i. I just bought Zapp 2 also.

12. Who's album is in your stereo right now?

LUKE: The records I just mentioned are all in there right now. Along with Sonny Rollins and "Moon Safari" by Air.

GRANT: The Deftones, "Around the Fur"

JEFF: Adorable, "Against Perfection"

13. About how many songs has SJ written? Are there any old demos circulating or is the official album the only recorded demo?

GRANT: Too many to mention. There's 2 double albums of demos hopefully not circulating. We've recorded a lot. No (the official album is not the only recorded demo).

JEFF: We've written and recorded close sixty songs (according to my estimates), and there are indeed quite a few old demos floating around. Luke's mom has the definitive box set of old Silver Jet demos.

14. You guys have a wide range of talents, on both sides of recording. What do you each like best about each thing (writing, performing, producing, etc)?

JEFF: The best thing about writing is when you just write a song and you're really excited about it. The best thing about performing is the fans. The best thing about producing/recording is when you've finished and you have a song you can play on your stereo.

GRANT: I like the fact that they are all different. And that each one is a different dimension of music making in the form of a band.

LUKE: My music has so much to do with my existence that all those things (writing, performing etc...) just make life feel worth living to me. Playing live is great because it's so instant. And recording is great because it's something you can repeatedly relish in. But writing is perhaps the coolest because it's the core of what's going on.

15. We're curious about the first time you heard your song on the radio. Where were you, and what did you do?

GRANT: I think I was on the way back from Santa Barbara the afternoon after playing a gig. I think it was Plastiqa. It was very much degraded by static as we were kind of far away. We may have pulled over in Oxnard, and I think Luke was with me.

LUKE: The first time I heard a Silver Jet song on the radio I think I was driving around LA. Which was cool but I think I was more excited when I heard it in other states.

JEFF: I don't remember actually, I think we were on tour somewhere. But it's always exciting to hear your band being played on the radio.

16. What are your middle names?

Please, no middle names. They seem pompous. Besides, Luke doesn't have one.

17. How did the guys get into music and decide that that's what they want to do with their lives? Did their parents give them the "You want to do what?!?!" when they told them?

JEFF: I've always liked music. During high school I started playing in bands and decided it was what I wanted to do. My parents have always been supportive.

LUKE: I figured it out in about 11th grade. Once my parents realized I had made up my mind they were very supportive and still are.

18. What is each memebers favorite color?

JEFF: I don't really have a favorite color.

LUKE: It would be a tie between red and yellow.

19. Do they have hobbies outside of music?

JEFF: I like to surf and I like photography.

LUKE: I have been painting (acryllic on canvas) more seriously than ever. That's been really nice. Good escape.

20. Do any of them collect anything?

GRANT: I also have a bunch of snare drums. I've sort of started a collection.

JEFF: I collect music gear, clothes and cheap sunglasses.

LUKE: I'm a packrat for sure but I don't have any specific collections going right now.
