Current activities of WARI

WARI group participates in women related ongoing discussion seminars and activities in Thailand and neighboring countries. Through these activities we share our findings and understanding of issues to contribute to the ongoing dialogue. Here we summarize some of our selected recent activities.

  • June 30-July 2, 2004, Beijing Plus 10 Meeting, Salaya, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand

Beijing Plus 10 Meeting took place at Mahidol University in Nakhon Pathom. WARI was part of a panel on Gender and Poverty. We were able to bring 3 selected grassroots women from north and northeast Thailand to this meeting. The conference was not well organized but the discussions and reports were outstanding showing how little progress has been made towards implementation of BPFA.

  • July 14, 2005, “Trafficking, Migration, Minorities and HIV/AIDS,” UNESCO, UNIAP and UNDP-SEAHIV Parallel Conference, Bangkok, Thailand
  • July 28-30, 2004, “The Changing Mekong: Pluralistic Societies Under Siege,” Khon Kaen, Thailand

“Mekong Under Seize” was a 3-day conference held in Khon Kaen. The conference was organized by the Center for Research on Plurality in the Mekong Region (CERP), Khon Kaen University, in collaboration with Center for Southeast Asian Studies & Center for Chinese Studies, Univ. of Michigan. WARI presented two papers: “Gender Equity in Mekong” and “Venders in Mekong-sub Region”. The Conference was successful in stimulating local research and dialogue.

September 20-25, 2004, Kartini Network Conference, Dalian, China

Kartini network is a recent attempt by academic activists of Asia and the Netherlands to stimulate discussion and promote the growth of women’s studies in Asia. WARI participated in the conference and presented a paper on “Growth and Challenges of Women’s Studies in Thailand”.

February 28-March 2, 2005, “Negotiating Gender Justice Conference,” Goteborg Univ., Sweden

Gottenburg University is organizing a conference on gender justice and negotiation. WARI’s presentation is on gender negotiation in Thailand.

April 3-5, 2005, Thai Studies/ Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Illinois, USA

During this International conference on Thai studies, WARI presentation is planned to be on women’ studies, Women NGOs and political participation of women in Thailand.
