DRIVETRAIN

One of the first things to be changed on the truck was the rearend housing.  The factory 10-bolt was replace with a 12-bolt from a '79 pickup with 3.08 gears.  The engine was next.  My uncle helped me build the 283 through April of 2000.  We built it with a steel crank, 0.060" over hypertonic pistons, a Rochester carb, cast iron intake from a mid-70's camaro, a set of 882 heads, and the cam was a single lobe pattern 0.458" lift and 218 degrees duration @ 0.050" tappet lift.  We installed it with a Zoom clutch mated back to the original 4-speed in the floor.  The transmission was changed soon after as its gear ratios were too high (numerically low) for the power of the engine to be effective.  I purchased a Saginaw three-ring transmission to go in its place, no overdrive but with the 3.08 rear gears it only turns around 2700 at 70 MPH.

Freshened up the engine during July of 2002.  Pulled it and the transmission out to clean up the engine compartment and area.  The heads were replaced with a pair of World Castings Sportsman II, the cam was stepped up to one with a single lobe pattern of  0.486" lift and 230 degrees duration @ 0.050" tappet lift, the cast intake was swapped for an Eldebrock intake and 600 CFM carb.  I also custom built a ram-air box from a sheet of aluminum, installed a new distributor from Proform and a set of custom length Accel Super Stock wires.
