Wheaton' Light Battery
(Chatham Artillery)

    The Chatham Artillery was created in 1785 but became a Confederate unit on July 12, 1862 and fought at Fort Pulaski, GA 1862; Battery Wagner, Charleston, SC, 1863; Olustee, FL; and in the retreat to North Carolina, including the Battle of Bentonville. They were also Cleghom's Battery, 1st (Olmstead's) Georgia Regiment. Company D, 1st Georgia Regulars

The 1st Regiment Georgia Regulars was organized as an artillery unit on July 24, 1861. It was later disbanded and many of its companies, including this one, was assigned to the 1st Volunteer Regiment of Georgia (Olmstead's; see Company K, 1st Regiment of Georgia, under infantry units) This Company was known as (Capt. Jacob) Read's, (Capt. Audley) Maxwell's, and later as (Capt. John M.) Guerard's Light Battery. They served at a number of places including Port Royal, before serving with the Army of Tennessee.

1. D.A. McLenan, enlisted February 22, 1861; listed as absent without leave, February 28, 1864.
