Company B/F, 20th Georgia Battalion

This battalion was formed in 1862 as "Millen's Battalion Georgia Partisan Rangers," also known as the 1st Georgia Partisan Rangers. They were later redesignated as the 20th Georgia Cavalry Battalion, Yancey's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia before being broken up by special order of 11 July, 1864. Company B was transferred to Company G of the Cavalry Battalion of the Jeff Davis Legion, Mississippi troops. Company F, "the Liberty Mounted Rangers" or "Liberty Dragoons" of Liberty County, was formed Jul 1862, from men of Liberty, Thomas, and Montgomery counties. On July 24, 1864, they were officially transferred to the 10th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, and as such served under General Joseph Wheeler in the Atlanta campaign. The men of these two companies left Georgia for the Army of Northern Virginia in April 1864, and fought at Haw's Shop, May 28, 1864; Trevillian Station, June 1l 12,1864;WhiteHouse, June20,1864; Nansis Shop, June 24, 1864; Sopri Church, June 28-29, 1864; New Market, July 16, 1864; Charles City Courthouse; White Oak Swamp, July 18, 1864; Reams Station, August 25, 1864. Memoirs of this regiment by Charles Paine Hansell (microfilm reel 283/27) and James Reid Jones (microfilm reel 283/29) are at the Georgia Department of Archives and History. The following unit was raised for six months service on 4 August 1863 at Mt. Vernon, GA. They were known as the "Montgomery Volunteers" and the only records of their service are found on National Archives microfilm.

Crosby's Company (State Troops)

Few records of this unit survive. According to papers in the Georgia Civil War pension of David Cauley, they were Captain Silas Crosby's Independent Company, which was formed in 1863 and served until they surrendered in Appling and Wayne counties in April 1865. They were attached to the 4th Georgia (Clinch's) Cavalry Regiment, which was formed from the 3rd Georgia Cavalry Battalion in January 1863. They served in North Georgia and northern Alabama, as well as the defense of Savannah.

Company B, 1st Florida Special Cavalry

Company E, 2nd Georgia Infantry Regiment, Screws Division, was formed in September 1863 under Captain John M. Stubbs. They surrendered in Florida in 1865. These men seem to have enlisted on May 20, 1864, in Virginia or possibly in Milledgeville, GA, in Company B, 1st Florida Special Cavalry Battalion. --- For a history of the 1st Florida Special Cavalry and its campaigns see Robert A. (1B.) William B. Blount. (Said in his Civil War pension that he was born in Montgomery County in 1840 and served in Capt. Mays Company B, Wilcox's Florida Volunteers, Finnegan's Brigade, and was wounded at Cold Harbor, Va. The regiment surrendered at Appomattox)

10th Georgia Cavalry

Company ?, 10th Georgia Cavalry, Young's Brigade, Butler's Division, Hampton's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, was formed in April 1862. (These men probably served in the 10th Georgia Cavalry Battalion until that unit was disbanded.)
