We leave the "BENMACHDUI" for a few weeks, We have to do a job
of dispersing the "TROPIC SHORE" for TRINITY HOUSE.This is a rig supply
boat that collided with a gas rig (20 mile out from Yarmouth)then sank
about 3 mile from the rig.
The contract was originally awarded to a
Newcastle firm, the diver director came to Hull to see about chartering
the "ASHBY"for the job, but we were to expensive (he chartered another
boat instead)he was a nice bloke.
It was about three weeks later that
we heard that he had been killed along with another diver, apparently
something had happened with the detonators which in turn had triggered the
explosives in the boat,there was a massive explosion and they never found
the bodies.
It was a week later that a director of the firm rang me up
to ask if we would complete the job, we arranged a suitable sum
(£76,000)and started gearing the boat up to do the job.

runs to pick up the cod, we made £1000 pounds for the sale of the cod, we
had a good drinking session in Yamouth with the proceeds (buying the crew
all there drinks all night)

After having a short break in Yarmouth, we went back to the wreck
to remove the mooring rope that was still on the wreck, because the
mooring rope may have show up as part of the wreck on Trinity Houses echo
sounder (when they resurveyed the wreck to verify it was dispersed to
their required level)
It was 12 midnight, so we tossed a coin to see
who would have to go down to release the mooring rope, I lost so I had to
go and release the rope, the sea was starting to rough up a bit (force 5)
with a forecast of force 8 coming soon (also the tide was running fast) I
asked the helmsman to run the boat up the tide, so that i could jump in
and come back on the current to the rope, i struggled to get down in the
current holding my torch, I eventually reached the bottom and released the
shackle holding the rope , and came back to the surface in pitch black
conditions 20 mile out at sea in rough seas, the ASHBY managed keep near
the buoy and i climbed back on board.
We then headed back to Hull in a
force 8 gale at approx 2am.
After that dispersal job, Trinity
House gave us another job of dispersing the "KATINA BULGARI" (SUNK 1939
4569 TONS)off the mouth of the Humber Estuary,we were paid £36,000.
