THE REINCARNATION OF NELLIE (Part 1) October 5, 1981
160. THE REINCARNATION OF NELLIE (Part 2)
October 12, 1981
- The theme music has changed again, and the credits certainly scroll
faster now. Notice that Melisa Sue Anderson is no longer listed in the
opening credits. In fact, her name is only mentioned in the closing credits
as a co-star with the people who played "Customer #1" and "Customer
#2". This doesn't seem very fair to poor Mary, who after seven years,
in one of her last apearences to be listed in the closing credits. At least
Linwood Bloomer who plays Adam was listed in the opening credits.
- Another case of who does the cooking: Mrs. Olsen tells Mr. Olsen that
Willie still needs his dad because Mr. Olsen does the cooking. Yet we have
still seen numerous episodes now that show Mrs. Olsen doing the cooking.
GOODBYE, MRS. WILDER and THE
ELECTION are too good examles of this.
Contributed by Alex Trenta, May 17, 1997.
- Mary & Adam left Walnut Grove and as they were saying their goodbye's,
Laura said to Mary something along the lines of: "I'll be sure to
write to you in Braille so Adam can't read them." Ummmmmmmm........wasn't
Adam the one who taught Mary to read Braille in the first place. I highly
doubt that regaining his sight as he did would block out his ability to
read Braille!!! Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but.......
Contributed by Nathan, June 1, 1997.
Additional: I think Laura means she'll write
in Bralle so that Mary can read it herself and not have to have Adam read
it.
Additional by Jennifer R, July 1, 1997.
- This episode, we assume from the Timeline,
takes place in 1885, six months after "The Lost Ones" (the season
finale to the previous season), because in the first act Adam makes a back-reference
to Mr. Mills & the land swindle in "Blind Justice".
Contributed by Hiphats, July 1, 1997.
- At the beginning of the second act, as we see the wagonmaster walking
across the town, we can still see the sign for "Irv Hartwig, Blacksmith",
who was slain eight years earlier (as deplicted in the previous season's
two-parter, "Sylvia"). Gosh!
How long does it take to replace a blacksmith in a small town like this???
(The answer would come in "Times Are Changin'").
Contributed by Hiphats, July 10, 1997.
- In the second part of the
reincarnation of nellie it's been established that Nancy deliberately tried
to get schoolmate Melinda frozen to death in the icehouse by tricking Willie
into locking the icehouse door. The town upon finding out Nancy's real
backround and the truth about the icehouse schemes revenge via a mermaid
booth, however while revenge is achieved for reason Nancy even as ajuvenile
is never actually arrested or prosecuted-not even by the victim's family!
Apparently premediated attempted murder is not against the law in Walnut
Grove even where a minor is the culprit!
Contributed by Chuck, December 30, 1997.

GROWING PAINS October 9, 1981
- The house in which "Mr. Tibbs" puts James and Albert up for
the night is the same house that Laura and Almanzo later acquire as the
boarding house, and the same one they blow up in the last episode. They
acquire the house from an old woman who lived there for decades. Mr. Tibbs
also lived there for decades, yet we know the two can't be husband and
wife, since they have different names and Mr. Tibbs said his wife had already
died. Who actually owned this house, or do we have two identical houses
in the same area?
- When Albert and James run away, they look for shelter when it starts
raining. You can see a covered bridge in the background. Why don't they
go under the bridge instead of getting soaked out in the woods?
- When James runs away and Albert goes looking for him, the rest of the
Ingalls make the assumption that Albert has found James, and don't seem
to show the same level of concern as in other episodes when someone runs
away. Sure, they're worried, and Pa even goes looking for them once, but
overall they seem a bit more nonchalant about it than in other episodes
where they gather search parties and stay out all night looking.
All 3 Contributed by Steve C, October 10, 1997.
- Isn't the house that Albert and James spend the night in the same one
used in "Welcome to Olesonville" where Mr. Hansen lived, in addition
to being the same one used in various other episodes that called for a
big house, such as "Welcome to Olesonville," Laura's boarding
house, the blind school, et al? There must have been a whole subdivision
of these houses!

DARK SAGE October 26, 1981
- In "The Wisdom of Solomon,"
Doc Baker supported a black doctor who worked in a reservation because
he had no chance to treat whites with medicine because he was not able
to buy it himself. That is why I wonder why Doc Baker cannot imagine a
black as a doctor and does not want Dr. Ledoux to be his partner.
Contributed by Ramon, July 8, 1997.
- This is the second episode this season to show the sign of the slain
"Irv Hartwig, Blacksmith". Looks like someone has worked a long
time to keep tabs on things until John Carter arrives.
Contributed by Hiphats, August 30, 1997.
- I think this can be easily explained. Many people have the mind set
that it's okay for people who are different to function as long as it's
not in their world. This justification was used to keep schools seperate.
The attitude of "It's okay for blacks to get an education ... just
not with my child." Same would probably go for a Doctor. Doc Baker
had no problem with a Black doctor, especially one who treated Indians,
but not a Black doctor treating his patients.
Contributed by Megan H, November 10, 1997.
- There was only one more mention of Dr. Ledoux, but he was never seen
again!!

A WISER HEART November 2, 1981
- It is interesting to note that Laura's co worker at her temporary dishwashing
job is none other than Miss Plumb, the school teacher.
Contributed by Marnie J. S, May 23, 1997.
- Additional: Not only is Ms. Plumb the temporary dishwasher
with Laura...but in an earlier episode (I think it's called the Third Miracle.....where
Mary and Adam are on their way to another city and the stage they're on
overturns...)....Ms. Plumb (Leslie Landon) is also the pregnant woman in
the stage....
Additional by Christi, June 28, 1997.
- Additional: Leslie Landon also was in 2 earlier episodes.
She was in "Plague" as a dying
little girl and in "The Election"
as a girl who accepts Nellies bribes of candy and votes for her. In all
these episodes, she never played the same person.
Additional by HYPER, July 1, 1997.
- Why would Laura go to school
in Arizona for 3 months, pregnant? Plus, she wasn't even showing any signs
of pregnancy by the time she left Arizona.
Contributed by TMTSoapop, December 25, 1997.
- Leslie Landon is Michael
Landon's daughter............mmmmmm

GAMBINI THE GREAT November 9, 1981
- Albert jumps in the pond
to prove he can do the rope trick during their school lunch break. The
next scene shows the outside of the house in the dark. We assume it is
now evening. Inside Albert is talking to Ma and Pa about the trick. Ma
tells Albert to go and get out of his wet clothes. How could his clothes
possibly stay wet for that long?

THE LEGEND OF BLACK JAKE November 16, 1981
- Bill Anderson the banker mentioned that he was the only one who had
the key to the bank. But then, you see Almanzo and Charles inside (the
part when they pounced on Dr. Baker and the Reverand Alden). So how did
they get inside?
Contributed by Carey, May 24, 1997.
- In CROSSED CONNECTIONS, Mrs.
Olsen says she does not keep her money in the bank, because she does not
trust banks. Why then is all her ransom money all stored in the bank where
Nancy and Willie cannot get to it? Who does she trust more, the bank, or
her own family? She has the money saved in the bank, so only SHE can get
it out.
Contributed by Alex Trenta, May 23, 1997.
- I find it laughable, horrible and terribly unrealistic that Mr. Anderson
would NOT give Willie and Nancy the money out of Mrs. Oleson's account
so that Harriett's and Nel's lives might be spared.

CHICAGO November 23, 1981
- When Pa, Mr.Edwards and the Newspaper Editor go into the bar to discuss
John Jr's death, the editor takes a drink from what apears to be an empty
cup!
Contributed by Alishea, July 4, 1997.
Corrected August 29, 1997.
- The newspaper man's name is spelled "Callihan" in the opening
credits, but spelled "Callahan" on his office door.

WAVE OF THE FUTURE December 7, 1981
- In the most infamous conclusion of all the "Little House"
episodes, we meet a man who is listed in the closing credits only as "Bearded
Man". Almost any 10-year old who grew up on Kentucky Fried Chicken
knows this character is Col. Sanders, the company's founder! But wait!
This episode is set in 1885, and Col. Sanders wasn't even born yet, and
obviously Kentucky Fried Chicken did not exist then! It's a good thing
the circus episodes "Annabelle",
"The Great Gambini", and "Little
Lou" did not feature Ronald McDonald or Ray Kroc's heirs would
have been up a creek!
Contributed by Hiphats, June 29, 1997. Corrected
July 18, 1997.
Additional: I found this on the Kentucky
Fried Chicken Home page: 1939 Colonel Harland D. Sanders perfects secret
blend of 11 herbs and spices in Corbin, Ky. and in 1952 Pete Harman in
Salt Lake City becomes the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchisee, opening
the first KFC.
Addional by Michael, July 11, 1997.
- Notice that the white-haired man at the end of the episode is supposed
to be Colonal Sanders, the guy behind the KFC restuarants!!! Mrs. Oleson
sure turned down a profitable offer!!! :-)
Contributed by HYPER, July 1, 1997.
- Note the scene where Caroline returns home after the grand opening
of Mrs. Oleson's new restaurant. She tells Charles that they made almost
$25. How could she know? She and Hester Sue left while Mr. and Mrs. Oleson
were still counting the money.

A CHRISTMAS THEY NEVER FORGOT December 21, 1981
- In this episode, everbody is having christmas celebration at the little
house. When Ma is telling her favorite or memorable christmas when she
was a child, you see her in a nice, big house with a nice dress, so this
gives me the impression that her family had money. But in "I Remember,
I Remember", she is living with her family on a farm, out in the country.
Did her parents run into financial problems?
Contributed by Gabbie T, July 27, 1997.
- In this episode, Ma said that she wore her necklace given to her by
her stepfather every Christmas, yet in the Premeire movie during the Christmas
part she wasn't wearing the necklace.
Contributed by Beth N, August 22, 1997.
- Once again, Melissa Sue Anderson, in her last television episode appearence
has her name listed in the closing credits, while Adam, played by Linwood
Bloomer, gets his name in the opening credits. To me this does not seem
fair. Mary had more screen time then James, Albert, or Cassandra (whom
all of which were listed in the opening credits), and was even in a flashback,
yet after eight years on Little House, has her name at then end.
Contributed by Alex Trenta, August 29, 1997.
- In the episode "A Christmas They Never Forgot," they seem
to forget about James. He only appears in the last couple of minutes of
the show when Pa goes out to the barn to get the Christmas presents. He
is not at the dinner table. He is not there to hear the Christmas stories.
When Pa tells Albert he'll have to give up his bed so the adults can use
it, James is nowhere around. James would also have to give up his bed.
Contributed by Lisle J, December 24, 1997.
- In the later Christmas episode, during the
flashback to Hester Sue's parents, they are sitting at the table in their
cabin talking with Hester Sue about Santa Claus being white, etc. At one
point the camera cuts away from the parents to Hester Sue, then back to
the parents, and they have switched places at the table. Clearly, they
had not had time to get up and sit back down. This drives me crazy every
time.

NO BEAST SO FIERCE January 4, 1982
- According to Charles, "half the town" is looking for Gideon
at first. How does Caroline know that "no one has checked the old
Taylor place"? Also later, the whole school searches for four hours
and no one finds Gideon. Then later, how does Caroline know to search "Pine
Lake"? She must have presumed that no one had looked there, yet it
can't be too far from the school, since she mentions that it is on her
way home. If the whole school had searched for four hours and Pine Lake
was close by, it seems like Caroline would have assumed someone had looked
there. In any case, it's remarkable that Caroline has such good luck twice
in a row!

STONE SOUP January 18, 1982
- In this episode, Almonza goes away with Pa, leaving pregnant Laura
behind to tend to the orchard. Laura got sick due to the reason that she
was always tending to the orhard in a heatwave. Why couldn't Ma have Albert
stay with Laura and he can help or even do it for her? Did Ma need Albert
at home all the time to help around the house that she couldn't have Albert
help by staying at his pregnant sisters home for the time Almonzo was away.

THE LEGACY January 25, 1982
- Timeline-wise, since this episode takes place in 1885 (as evidenced
by the tombstone of Jack Prescott seen in the first act), this story would
have to take place between "Wave Of The Future" and "The
Christmas They Never Forgot", since Christmas is at the end of 1885,
and the preceding story ("Stone Soup") and the following episode
("Uncle Jed") takes place at the beginning of 1886. Also, the
actor who playes Jack Prescott (Claude Earl Jones, no relation to James
Earl Jones) is the same one who is seen in "Home Again" as the
man who sets Albert free after being in jail.
Contributed by Hiphats, July 18, 1997.
- Also, Jack Prescott's tombstone says that he was born in 1833. From
the conversation between him and Charles prior to Prescott's death, we
learn that Charles is some years younger than Jack, since Jack says to
Charles, "wait till you get to be my age." This means that Charles
would have to be born after 1833, and not in 1827 as the timeline
indicates.

UNCLE JED February 1, 1982
- Jed Cooper also played in 2 other episodes.. Going home and the episodes
where the Ingalls are gold mining...Jed playes a old gold miner who's wife
dies... Then he does also... What gives?????
Contributed by Jim R, August 30, 1997.
- Uncle Jed is the same old man who plays the man buying the house from
Pa in "Going Home." He is also
the man who plays Zachariah in "Gold Country."
I think he might be in a couple more episodes as well.
Contributed by Mr. USA, September 3, 1997.
- Someone had commented that they wanted to know how far the Ingalls
house is from Walnut Grove. In this episode, Uncle Jed asks Nels how are
it is to the Ingalls farm. Nels answered about 3 miles.

SECOND CHANCE February 8, 1982
- In "The Wave of the Future," everyone
is relieved when the "Mrs. Sullivan's Kitchen" restaurant doesn't
work out, and the work load can lighten by not having to be open all day.
Yet in this episode they appear to be serving all three meals again. It
seems the work load would be just as heavy, and even more so if the town
prefers the current menu to Mrs. Sullivan's.

A PROMISE TO KEEP March 1, 1982
- By the time of "A Promise To Keep", the restaurant and inn
have officially become "Caroline's". But just before the end
of the first act, we see a wagon passing in front of "Nellie's"
Restaurant and Inn. I guess the producers must have used stock footage
from an earlier episode to avoid costs. Also, in the beginning of the second
act, we see Isaiah walking into Caroline's Restaurant And Inn, then we
see him ordering medicine from Olsen's Mercantile. Since when has Nellie's/Caroline's
inn looked like Olsen's Mercantile? Maybe the producers should have re-shot
the beginning of the second act.
Contributed by Hiphats, June 29, 1997.
- Correction: This is in answer to Hiphats'
nitpick above. First of all, didn't the sign on the building that says
"Nellie's" remain there all throughout? I could be mistaken,
but I was thinking that it was only the painting on the window that was
changed to "Caroline's." Also, at the beginning of the second
act, Isaiah isn't walking into the inn, he is walking out. Since he was
staying at the inn, I think we are to presume that he is leaving the inn
and walking toward Oleson's Mercantile.
Contributed by Steve C, October 30, 1997.
- In a shot where Laura leaves Isaiah to care for baby Rose, you can
see the destroyed Wilder house on the left of the screen (remember what
happened in the previous episode, "Days Of Sunshine,
Days Of Shadow"?). Some LHOTP affiliates (such as Q58 in Sacramento,
CA and TBS Superstation) skip that previous story in continuity, so the
meaning of the shot is totally incomprehensable to its viewers.
Contributed by Hiphats, August 30, 1997.
- Grace, Mr. Edwards' wife, is not played by the original actress. In
fact she is played by the mother whose daughter dies in "My
Ellen". Also Mr. Edwards' middle son, Carl, is played by a new
actor.
Contributed by Sarah M, October 29, 1997.
- When Mr. Edwards receives the letter from Grace and opens it, the camera
briefly shows the letter and with still-frame you can read most of it.
The voice of Grace reading the letter leaves part of it out.
