Part Two

CHRIS:
There are 8 of them down there. There could be more on watch. Buck and JD, go that way. You two take a position here. Josiah can come with me.
MATTIE:
So what now?
KATE:
Let 'em flush the gang cut. 'Cause you're not gonna catch Del that way. Knowing him, he's gonna sneak off in the opposite direction.
MATTIE:
That's where we'll catch him.

[inaudible conversations]
MAN:
Ohh!
MAN:
Look out!
[men shout to each other]
BUCK:
Get back to the girls.
JD:
No!
BUCK:
JD, watch out for 'em. Go!
MAN:
Unh!

[whistling]
DEL:
Well, well, if it isn't killer Kate and mad Miss Mattie.
MATTIE:
Hey, Del.
DEL:
You don't need that, do you? Uh-uh. Mattie, you, too.

MAN:
Aah!

DEL:
You know... I'd planned on killing you. But...now that I see you again, it occurs to me... Well... I've missed you.
MATTIE:
Me, too?
DEL:
Sure, Mattie. You, too.
MATTIE:
I want my share of the money, Del.
DEL:
Well...it's a shame, but... I can't recall where I put it.
MATTIE:
That's ok. Kate knows where it is.
KATE:
You talk in your sleep.
DEL:
Well, then I just might have to kill you after all.
JD:
Hey, Mister! Drop it.

MAN:
Hyah!
MAN:
Come on. Let's go!
MAN:
Hyah, hyah!
JOSIAH:
Chris, should we go after them?
CHRIS:
Where's JD?
BUCK:
He's back with the girls.
CHRIS:
All right, let's get back there. We'll catch up with them later.

MATTIE:

Sorry, Del.
JD:
You all right, Mattie?
MATTIE:
Get the hell out of here.
DEL:
Go ahead, Kate, it's why you're here.
JD:
What's going on here, Mattie? What's going on here, Mattie?
MATTIE:
Shut up, JD.
DEL:
Who's your little boyfriend, Mattie?
MATTIE:
He ain't my boyfriend.
JD:
Just exactly how well do you two know each other, Mattie?
DEL:
He sure talks like your boyfriend.
MATTIE:
I told you, he ain't!
KATE:
Ignore him, Mattie, he's just baitin' you.
DEL:
Shoot me, then, Kate. Go ahead.
JD:
All right, what in hell is going on here, Mattie?
MATTIE:
Shut up, JD. I said, shut up!
DEL:
Boy, I swear, Mattie, you'd have shot him by now if he wasn't your boyfriend, so who is he?
MATTIE:
Nobody.
JD:
[groans]

DEL:
You could have shot me, Kate. But... you're a woman.
KATE:
Come on!

KATE:
Follow me, Mattie.
[horses neigh]
KATE:
Hyah! Hyah!
BUCK:
Chris, it's JD! I found him!
DEL:
Hyah! Hyah!
JD:
Oh, Buck, oh. Oh, she shot me. Buck, oh, she shot me. Mattie shot me, Buck. Nice job it was...
BUCK:
Go after 'em, Chris. Gun 'em down if you have to, but just get 'em. Hyah, come on!

BUCK:
Hang on, JD! Hyah! Hyah! Come on!

KATE:
Hyah! Keep up, Mattie. Hyah!

BUCK:
Hey, Nathan. Nathan! Nathan! JD's been hurt bad! Hey, Nathan! Nathan! Nathan!
CASEY:
JD!
BUCK:
Nathan, come quick.
NATHAN:
What happened?
CASEY:
JD!
BUCK:
Got him. Go!
CASEY:
JD! JD!
VIN:
He's all right. He's in good hands now.
NATHAN:
Let's get him up this way. Come on.
CASEY:
What have I done? I wished him harm.
VIN:
Now, don't start talkin' like that.

CHRIS:
That's far enough, ladies.
KATE:
Get out of our way.
CHRIS:
Now I never shot a woman before, but I'd love for you to give me a reason.
JOSIAH:
Now, that'd be really bad luck.
MATTIE:
Kate?
KATE:
It's gonna be all right.
CHRIS:
I don't think so.

CHRIS:
You better start talking about your involvement with Del Spivak.
[cell door clangs shut]
KATE:
I got nothin' to say to you.
JOSIAH:
You better think about something, 'Cause that money we found on you came off a robbery where people were killed.
MATTIE:
Hey, the money was mine. It had nothing to do--
KATE:
Mattie!
CHRIS:
Oh, it was your money, huh? It must mean that must mean you were involved in that stagecoach robbery. Ah, you're not tough enough. What do you think, Josiah, you think she's tough enough to be involved in something like that?
JOSIAH:
Not from this side of the bars.
MATTIE:
You want to know how tough I am?
KATE:
Leave her alone!
CHRIS:
I'll leave her alone. Of course I'll be the one that's got to cut her down after they hang her.
KATE:
Hang?
MATTIE:
Well, what-- Kate, what does he mean, hang? Nobody ever said anything about hanging. Kate, I can't hang.
KATE:
You listen to me. You listen to me.
MATTIE:
Nobody said anything about hanging.
KATE:
I will think of something. I always do. Hey, look at me. Shh shh shh. No, Mattie, stop it, I'm right here. I'm gonna think of something. I'm gonna get you out of here. Look at me, ok? Look at me.

[rooster crows]
NATHAN:
Well I got the bullet out. Uh...but he lost a lot of blood. I--I just don't know.
BUCK:
I should have known... about those two. Well, now I do know, and I'm gonna do something about it.
JUDGE TRAVIS:
Wait, wait, wait. A court will have to weigh the evidence and decide, not you.
BUCK:
Tell me something, does a rope know the difference between a woman's neck and a man's neck? Will you?
EZRA:
Well, I take it there's no good news.
NATHAN:
We need to figure out what those 2 girls are up to. I've got an idea.

KIRKLAND:
That's the lawyer you told me about?
EZRA:
Ezra P. Standish, attorney at law. At your service.
KIRKLAND:
What's the "p" stand for?
EZRA:
Persuasive. Now, the way I see it, you rode into town brandishing a gun, which constitutes a mere misdemeanor for unlawful use of firearms. However, you were gunned down, dragged from your sickbed, and unjustly imprisoned. Now... cruel and unusual punishment, I'd say.
KIRKLAND:
Well, you sound right good.
EZRA:
Thank you. But first, we need to get past your unfortunate association with one Mr. Spivak.
KIRKLAND:
How we gonna do that?
EZRA:
Well, it seems to me we need to offer the judge something in the way of an exchange for leniency.
NATHAN:
The judge is awful anxious to know about those 2 ladies in there.
KIRKLAND:
How do I know you can fix it with the judge if I talk?
NATHAN:
If you don't, you will hang.
EZRA:
If you don't mind, Mr. Jackson. Now, regarding Katherine Stokes, was she a member of the gang?
KIRKLAND:
Kate? She was just Del's girl. She's mean, but she ain't no killer. All she ever done was try to keep that loony sister of hers out of trouble.
NATHAN:
So Kate didn't shoot nobody?
KIRKLAND:
She'd have shot Del a long time ago if she could have. He used to beat her somethin' awful. But Mattie, ha ha, you should have seen her at the stagecoach robbery. Still gives me chills. She shot this one passenger 'cause he couldn't get his wedding ring off fast enough.
EZRA:
I'm sorry, but even I find it hard to believe that a sweet little thing like that could be so cold-blooded. Now, if you're going to waste my time--
KIRKLAND:
Well, I can prove it. That wedding ring? She wears it around her neck like some kind of prize. I swear.
EZRA:
Well, we'll just have to look into it, then. Good day.
KIRKLAND:
Well, you think the judge will go easy on me?
EZRA:
Oh, that, yes. Well, did you perchance, uh, kill more than one person?
KIRKLAND:
Well...yeah.
EZRA:
Well, then you are in luck. He can only hang you once.
KIRKLAND:
Wait a minute, Ezra!

JUDGE TRAVIS:
I was there the day Marcus McNeil exchanged this ring with Christina. He said it was the happiest day of his life. Marcus was a doctor. He helped people. He saved lives. JD Dunne... he helped a lot of people in this town. Now he's fightin' for his young life. The court has reached a verdict. Ready to pronounce sentence. Miss Katherine Stokes. There's no clear evidence of criminal behavior on your part. Your efforts to save your sister were misguided, but understandable. You're a smart young woman. Hopefully, smart enough to make something of your life... given a second chance. I'm going to give it to you. You're free to go.
MATTIE:
That's good, right?
JUDGE TRAVIS:
And Madeline Stokes... you've been found guilty of murder, cold-blooded. Far as I can tell, you have nothing to give this world in return for what you've taken from it. I've never had to say this to a woman. But I sentence you to hang by the neck until dead tomorrow at dawn.
MATTIE:
What? No, no, I can't. Who--who the hell do you think you are? I will kill you! I will kill you! You hear me? I will kill you! I will kill you! I swear to god, I'll kill you! You bastard, I will kill you! Let go of me! Let go! You bastard... I will kill you! Aah! I'll kill him. I swear it!

KATE:
When Mattie was 7, Ma hanged herself in the barn. Mattie's the one who found her.
BUCK:
That an excuse for murder?
KATE:
Pa used to get drunk and beat us like we were animals.
BUCK:
What do you want from me?
KATE:
You talk to that judge. You ask him to let her spend all her years in prison. Anything but hangin'.
BUCK:
Should've thought of that 'fore she started riding with Del Spivak.
KATE:
That was my fault. I didn't know he was bad when I first met him. I just knew he weren't pa. Found out later he was worse.
BUCK:
You could've left him.
KATE:
He'd of killed me first.
BUCK:
Kate... I have spent my whole life... thinking that women were... everything good that warms the soul. And that got my friend shot.
KATE:
We're human, Buck.
BUCK:
Guess JD is, too, 'cause that bullet his gut proved that, didn't it?

CHRIS:
He's a strong kid. He'll make it.
JUDGE TRAVIS:
Well, I don't know what to think.
KATE:
I want to make a deal for Mattie's life.
CHRIS:
You ain't got nothing to offer.
KATE:
How about Del Spivak?

[whistle][whistle][whistle]
[bird coos]
DEL:
Miss me?
KATE:
Oh, I knew you'd be watching the town.
DEL:
You know me too well. It's become a liability.
KATE:
I also know where your money is. I'll help you get it back if you help me free Mattie.
DEL:
That's my girl.

[door squeaks]
JOSIAH:
I know you don't want me around, so I'll just leave this here with you. Peace, I leave with you. My peace I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
[squeak][cell door closes]
MATTIE:
Am I going to hell?
JOSIAH:
Well, now, some people think that hell is just a state of mind.
MATTIE:
But hell's for people who've sinned.
JOSIAH:
Well, there's always redemption for a sinner.
MATTIE:
[sighs] I'm scared, preacher.
JOSIAH:
That man on the stagecoach that you killed... and JD... you think they were scared?
MATTIE:
[sniffles] I never thought about it.
JOSIAH:
Well, think about it. Maybe that will be your path to redemption.
MATTIE:
Will you say a prayer with me?
JOSIAH:
You got one in mind?
MATTIE:
I like the one about the Lord being a shepherd.
JOSIAH:
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.

BUCK:
JD I'm so sorry.

JOSIAH:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul.

BUCK:
I'm so sorry.

JOSIAH:
He guideth me on the paths of virtue for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I shall fear no evil.
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.
Thou anointest my head with oil.
My cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life...

DEL:
Hyah!

JOSIAH:
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord... forever.

CASEY:
JD
JD:
I thought... I thought I was gonna die before I had a chance to say that.. I'm sorry. And--and... and how much I care about you.
CASEY:
Shh shh shh.
JD:
[sighs]

MAN:
Get out of here, you old drunk.
DRUNK:
I'm sorry.
MAN:
Wait here. Keep your eyes open.

KATE:
Mattie, get up. Hey! Where are the keys?
MATTIE:
I think I saw them put them in the middle drawer. Is Del coming?
KATE:
Yeah, he's coming.

MAN:
Wait outside, boys.
MAN 2:
She said it's over here.
MAN:
Here we go.

MATTIE:
So, they ain't gonna hang me, right?
KATE:
No, they're not gonna hang you. But I'm not gonna wait to find out.

MAN:
It's empty.
[cocks gun]
EZRA:
Lose something, boys?
NATHAN:
I got a hair trigger.

CHRIS:
You're surrounded, boys. Drop it! Get 'em up!

DEL:
Nice little welcoming party you arranged.
[click]
DEL:
It's too bad you couldn't do that when you had a loaded gun. You wanted her free, Kate?
MATTIE:
Oh!
DEL:
She's free now.
KATE:
Aah!
MATTIE:
Are you still gonna hate me?
KATE:
No.
MATTIE:
You're good luck after all, preacher.
JOSIAH:
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.
MATTIE:
[crying]
JOSIAH:
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord... forever.

JD:
Oh, the fresh air does feel good, but I feel like an old lady.
BUCK:
You look like one, too.
JD:
Oh, Buck.
CASEY:
You look just fine, JD.
BUCK:
Love is blind.
JD:
You know, I'm feelin' kind of tired all of a sudden. Would you mind taking me back?
BUCK:
Y'all gonna be all right for yourself?
CASEY:
Yeah, I'll push him.

KATE:

Figure I owe you thanks for not telling the judge I was trying to break her out.
BUCK:
Yeah, well, think he knew anyway. He probably figured you'd already paid enough for it. So...where to now?
KATE:
Pa left us a farm. More like a shack in a weed patch. Guess it's mine alone now.
BUCK:
Kate... you fought hard for your sister. You can do the same for yourself.
KATE:
Boy, I was wrong about you. You're not like the others.
BUCK:
Yep. Been told I'm one-of-a-kind.
KATE:
Sure hope not.
