Part Two

MA NICHOLS:
Where do you boys imagine you're going?
NICHOLS:
We know know where he's holed up at, Ma.
MA NICHOLS:
Don't any one of you show your faces back here until you fill him with lead. But hear me now, bring him back alive enough so I watch him breathe his last. What are you waiting for?!

EZRA:
If they follow my instructions to the letter, they should reach Juarez by week's end. I believe we have about 2 hours before my deceit will be uncovered. Of course when they discover that I've sent them on a wild goose chase, I have their firm assurance they would come back to inflict upon me, and I quote, "excruciating pain."

VIN:
Nathan, you best stay in town. Ezra may need some doctoring. Buck and I will go warn Chris.
EZRA:
On your horses, boys. That is good.
NATHAN:
Go easy on that stuff.

HANK:
This the gun. Shot him 3 times. Man found silver all around your land. Silver?
CHRIS:
What are you talking about?
HANK:
You know, that David Nichols. He's a clever one. Took his time. Never let on what he was doing. Once he burned you out, couple families got scared. Year later they were gone. Yep. Place is pretty well empty now. Had it all to himself when I found him. Man will do anything for silver. Turn the kindest-hearted man into a cold-blooded killer.
CHRIS:
What are you doing with them knots?

HANK:
So I remember. Remember not to forget. But you know all about that.
CHRIS:
Some things I don't want to remember. Others I don't want to forget.
HANK:
Feels pretty strange, don't it? To carry around all that anger all this time, now you don't know who to be mad at. You can be mad at me if it'll help you out any.
CHRIS:
I already done that. Didn't do any good.

NICHOLS:
Whoa, whoa. I don't see any river. I think that fancy-talking fella lied to us.
PETER NICHOLS:
Maybe he knows where Larabee is.

MA NICHOLS:
I know he's in heaven. David was such a good boy. Never had a hard word for anyone. He was the best one. Generous to a fault. Always had a smile for everyone.

JOSIAH:
Sounds like quite a man.
MA NICHOLS:
He was a saint. Why? Why did he take my boy? There is no answer. Is there?
JOSIAH:
Death is a question.
MA NICHOLS:
I don't understand. God protected us. Blessed us with healthy children. Now David's murdered. And he was the good one. A lamb.
JOSIAH:
How do you honor a lamb? A man of peace? With bloodshed? Or with forgiveness? You need to find forgiveness, Ma'am.
MA NICHOLS:
You're wrong, preacher. I made a pledge to God. I made a promise to David. I will find forgiveness when I've kept my word.

VIN:
Whoa. Over yonder. They turned around. Headed right to Chris.

BUCK:
I reckon somebody straightened them out. Come on. Hyah.

HANK:
Is that dumplings?
CHRIS:
Yeah.
HANK:
Sarah teach you how to do that?
CHRIS:
She made the best chicken and dumplings I ever ate. Adam wanted them every night. I did, too. But she always said, "Sunday's the day for dumplings." I never knew why. Just the way she was.

HANK:
Sunday dumplings. She got that peculiarity from her mother. And I don't know why she did it either. But I miss those dumplings.
CHRIS:
But there was a place for you.
HANK:
You gave up on me. Didn't have time for the old man.
CHRIS:
Well, you didn't approve.
HANK:
Of course I didn't approve. 'Cause even after you were married, You was still a rogue. Gallivanting out of town with your friends, roostered up, looking for trouble. Trouble came, didn't it, Chris Larabee? Trouble came. Killed my little girl. Where were you?

CHRIS:
You weren't there neither. Gonna spend the rest of our lives blaming each other? It's not what she would've wanted. Gotta learn to let it go.
HANK:
I can't. Maybe I loved her too much.
CHRIS:
Maybe we both did.

[horses galloping]
NICHOLS:
There it is!

JOHN NICHOLS:
Ma will be mad if he's too dead to kill.

HANK:
Glad you boys showed up before they did. Saved my life. I owe you one.
VIN:
I'm gonna double back, see if they got smart.
CHRIS:
Watch your back.

PETER NICHOLS:
There's too many tracks.
NICHOLS:
Keep searching till it gets dark. The rest of you keep looking.

[thunder]
CHRIS:
We'll camp here.
BUCK:
Hank, come first light you ought to move on. We'll slow those city folks down for you.
HANK:
I got nowhere to go.
BUCK:
Hank, you gotta go. You killed a man.
CHRIS:
Man deserved what he got.

NICHOLS:
He wasn't home.
JOHN NICHOLS:
He tricked us, ma.
MA NICHOLS:
Who tricked you?
NICHOLS:
That fancy-talkin' fella.
PETER NICHOLS:
There's 7 of 'em, Ma. They've been protecting Connolly, playing us for fools.
MA NICHOLS:
Is that true? Are there 7 men protecting Hank Connolly?
JOSIAH:
You should take your boys and leave town, Ma'am.
MA NICHOLS:
You tell those men I will not be made a fool of. you tell those 7 men I'm sending them and Connolly straight to the devil.
JOSIAH:
I'll pass that along.
MA NICHOLS:
And, you, Preacher... you can pray for their souls.

[coyote howls]
BUCK:
Look at him sleeping there. Snug as a thumb in a baby's mouth. Remember that time old Hank caught you sneaking around the barn to see Sarah? Came after you with a shotgun.
[laughing]

CHRIS:
Yeah. At least he used rock salt instead of buckshot.
BUCK:
Uh-huh. Just his way of saying he liked you.
CHRIS:
Shoot, that old man did everything humanly possible to keep me away from his little girl.
BUCK:
Oh, it wasn't just you. You know that. Nobody was good enough.
CHRIS:
He was right. Nobody was.
BUCK:
Yep.
CHRIS:
I can't see her face anymore, Buck. Can't hear Adam calling me Pa. They're fading away.
BUCK:
Maybe it's time for that.
CHRIS:
No. No, I need to remember.
[sizzling]

VIN:

[lookout whistling] Vin coming in.
They headed back to town.
CHRIS:
Buck and I have been talking. We reckon Mexico is the best place for you.
HANK:
Mexico?
CHRIS:
I'll ride with you.
HANK:
No, Chris Larabee. You got a home here. Besides, I prefer to keep my own company. Maybe I'll see you around one of these days.
CHRIS:
That would be nice.
HANK:
I was wrong about you, Chris.
CHRIS:
Vaya con dios. We're heading back to town.
BUCK:
Yep.

HANK:
Howdy-do.
MAN:
Good morning.

JD:
Would you look at them. Prancing around like a bunch of peacocks.
CASEY:
JD, you don't have to be jealous of them.
JD:
Casey, I ain't jealous of a bunch of city slicker desperadoes.
CASEY:
Desperadoes? Bad men don't travel with their mother.

JD:
You ain't met her.
CASEY:
You shouldn't talk that way about other people's mothers.
NICHOLS:
Watch where you're going.
JD:
Now don't go sneakin' up on people like that, huh, boys?
PETER NICHOLS:
Now I know who you are. You're the messenger boy.
JD:
I--I don't think you know what you're talking about.

PETER NICHOLS:
Now, don't be offended. It's the best job in town.
JD:
Yeah, and why is that?
PETER NICHOLS:
We don't kill... the messenger.

EZRA:
So I guess the redoubtable Nichols clan must be full of hot air. They threatened me with the
most vile retribution, yet here I sit.

JOSIAH:
She told me she was gonna bring the wrath of God. Send us straight to hell.

EZRA:
Well, then I fully expect to be inundated by frogs, locusts, and other Unspeakable pestilence in a matter of moments.

JOSIAH:
Boys.
NATHAN:
Where's Hank?
CHRIS:
He's headed to Mexico.
JOSIAH:
You know, I can't help but wonder if that old lady isn't right. What if her son was innocent?
NATHAN:
You know I felt the same way. Talking to that one who broke his arm. They all seem so sincere.

EZRA:
A wise man once said, little sincerity is a dangerous thing. And a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.
JD:
I've got a message for everybody.

BUCK:
JD!
EZRA:
Good Lord.
JD:
They're gonna kill us all for helping Hank.

VIN:
Get the kid a chair.
CASEY:
JD! Oh, JD, I'm sorry!
JD:
I'm ok. They can't hurt me.
EZRA:
Well, your face would belie that assessment, young man.
JD:
They didn't hurt me. I'm fine.
CASEY:
You were right. Why didn't I see that?
JD:
Oh, you're complicated, Casey.

CHRIS:
Casey, get JD out of here.
JD:
Chris, I can fight. I'm fine.
CHRIS:
All right, JD, get Casey out of here!

CASEY:
Come on.
CHRIS:
We're gonna finish this.

HANK:
Chris Larabee, I shot him, Chris. I met the man who killed your wife and son.
CHRIS:
Hank? What did you say?
HANK:
He killed Sarah and Adam. Shot him, left him for dead. And I killed him with this gun.

HANK:
Wanted Sarah. He wanted Sarah for himself.
CHRIS:
Who?
HANK:
He wanted Sarah. Green-eyed monster. But you had Sarah.
CHRIS:
What are you talking about, Hank?
HANK:
I saw him. Riding towards me. and I shot him before he could say howdy-do. Green-eyed monster.
BUCK:
His mind's gone.

HANK:
Shot him 3 times. Bang. Bang. Bang. Green-eyed monster.
MA NICHOLS:
You, inside. Send out the old man! We know he's in there. You have one minute.
BUCK:
We can't send him out there, Chris. They'll kill him.
HANK:
They're after me.
BUCK:
Hey, Hank. Let's sit down. Come on.
HANK:
No trouble. No trouble at all. That's them, the Nichols. I'm no trouble.
CHRIS:
We need to talk. I know your boy was innocent.
MA NICHOLS:
Then send Hank Connolly out.
CHRIS:
He's sick. He's not right in the head. Doesn't know who he is or where he is.
MA NICHOLS:
There's no excuse for murdering my son.

CHRIS:
You're right. We'll take him back, see he stands trial.
MA NICHOLS:
Trial?
CHRIS:
You'll have your justice. No sense anybody else getting hurt.
MA NICHOLS:
That's not my kind of justice. My justice is the apocalypse.

CHRIS:
Get down!

NICHOLS BROTHER:
Come on, Ma. Please, let's get inside. Don't shoot my ma. Hurry! Come on, Ma. Get the hell inside.
MA NICHOLS:
Don't blaspheme. Remember, o most blessed virgin Mary, that ever was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, employed thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence I come before thee, o virgins of virgins, o mother of the word incarnate, despise not my intentions but in thy mercy here and answer me. Amen. Remember...

VIN:
Nathan, let's get on their flank.
NATHAN:
Now!
MA NICHOLS:
[repeating prayer]

CHRIS:
Get down!

VIN:
Nathan!

NATHAN:
That coach is armored. I think it's made out of steel.

VIN:
Damn.
JOSIAH:
What are you doing?

EZRA:
We've been most inhospitable. I intend to offer our guests a libation.
Aah!
EZRA:
Josiah! Whiskey!

JOSIAH:
[whistles] Aah!
BUCK:
Josiah!
NICHOLS:
He's on the roof.
EZRA:
Aah.

PETER NICHOLS:
Aah! Aah!

NICHOLS:
Aah!
MA NICHOLS:
Inspired... By this confidence--
BUCK:
Josiah! Stay down, stay down. Hank, get down. You're gonna get yourself shot.
HANK:
Howdy-do.
BUCK:
Hank. Hank, it's me, Buck. Buck Wilmington.
HANK:
You killed her.
BUCK:
Hank.
HANK:
You wanted her. Howdy-do.
BUCK:
Hank!
JOHN NICHOLS:
Get him! Ma! We've got him! We got him!

VIN:
Good throw.
NATHAN:
Thanks.

MA NICHOLS:
I want to see him die.
JOSIAH:
No.

MA NICHOLS:
You're one of them. How could you, a man of God, be party to such violence?

JOSIAH:
How could a mother?
MA NICHOLS:
The debt is paid. He's on his way to hell. And there's no one can help him now.
JOSIAH:
And who's gonna help them?
JOHN NICHOLS:
Ma? Ma?
MA NICHOLS:
Has God forsaken me?
JOSIAH:
An eye for an eye leaves us... blind.

MA NICHOLS:
Forgive me. Forgive me. My sweet lamb. Forgive me. will you-- will you forgive me?
JOSIAH:
It's not for me to forgive.

HANK:
Remember... not to forget, Chris Larabee. [breathes last breath]
CHRIS:
I'll never forget.
